Dr. Hassan Fakhro chaired the 3rd meeting of the National Committee for the World Trade Organization

Industry and Commerce Minister and Chairman of the National Committee of the World Trade Organization Dr. Hassan Fakhro chaired the 3rd meeting of the National Committee for the World Trade Organization in the presence of members and representatives of government agencies and private sector.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Fakhro welcomed the representatives of the National Committee, which was formed based on the decision of His Royal Highness the Prime Minister No. 33 of 2013 and based on the Decree No. (25) for the year 1996 to establish the National Committee and the statement of its terms of reference as amended by Decree No. (59) for the year 2011, praising their positive and constructive contributions in the work of the Committee that aimed at enhancing trade policy and highlighting its achievement and achieve national interest.

During the meeting they discussed topics of the 9th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, which was held in Bali, Indonesia, during the period from December 3-6 2013, where they discussed a number of agreements and such as trade facilitations that achieved a significant milestone in the framework of the multilateral international trading system.

The importance of trade facilitation is confirmed, as a result of a consensus of all members of the WTO, which now includes 160 countries. The Kingdom of Bahrain has supported trade facilitations negotiations since the 6th Conference of the WTO in Hong Kong in 2005.

This agreement characterized in giving additional advantages for the developing countries about implementing this agreement, Such as the extension the period of implementing some of its provisions until the completion the legal requirements with a pledge to provide technical and financial assistance from donor countries and organizations.

The meeting also reviewed the results of the review trade policy of the kingdom which was during the period from 22 to 24 April 2014 to discuss and approve all of the government’s report and the report of the Secretariat of the WTO about the components and themes and developments of the trade policy of the Kingdom of Bahrain. There was a great tribute for Kingdom’s trade policy development in various economic areas compared to the second audit in 2007. The representatives and members of the WTO praised the openness climate of the Kingdom and the positive developments in diversifying economic in Bahrain.

They also reviewed the development of Bahrain trade capacity project in cooperation with United Nations Development Programme, which passed through several stages.

They also discussed proposed activities during the second half of 2014, including:
• set up a Bahraini committee to facilitate trade implementing trade facilitation agreement.
• Preparation to organize a national conference to evaluate Bahrain readiness to implement trade facilitation agreement (proposed 21 to 22 September 2014).
