IIC holds “Innovating Oman” Workshop next Sunday

: Thursday, December 05 - 2013 @ 08:16

In line with its efforts to promote a culture of research and innovation in Oman and to inspire Omani talents and innovations, Industrial Innovation Centre (IIC) will hold “Innovating Oman” Workshop during the period from 8 to 10 December at City Seasons Hotel, Muscat under the auspices of Dr. Hamad bin Hashim Al Dhahab, chairman of IIC.

Moderated by Mr. Jeffrey Phillips, VP Marketing and a lead consultant for OVO Innovation, the workshop seeks to build a greater synergy between innovation stakeholders, and deepen understanding of the frameworks, competencies and methodologies that improves innovation effectiveness. This will be achieved through understanding how innovation, innovative purposes and goals are defined, how innovation programmes are defined to achieve short and long term goals and how are those programmes collaboratively structured to ensure maximum success.

“Innovating Oman” is a three-day workshop that considers the essential “building blocks” of enterprise innovation. As innovation becomes an essential competency for many organisations and corporations, it is important to understand the frameworks, competencies and methodologies that improve innovation effectiveness. The workshop will examine two critical elements for innovation capacity; a strategic framework built by executives that allow innovation to flourish and a defined innovation process or workflow that simplifies and clarifies innovation activities. After reviewing these building blocks, more advanced topics will be underscored, including a brief overview of “open innovation.”

The event is organised in collaboration with OVO Innovation, and is sponsored by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), The Research Council (TRC), Information Technology Authority (ITA), and the Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (PAIPED).

It should be noted that the Industrial Innovation Centre (IIC) is a government entity set up from the collaboration of The Research Council (TRC) and The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE). The clearly defined goals of each parent organisation were stipulated in the Industrial Innovation Assistance Programme (IIAP), a programme that has been successfully executed since the centre’s official inauguration in February 2010.

The core activities that required fulfillment as per the IIAP mandate include encouraging Oman’s Industry to undertake R&D to enable them to better perform, both nationally and internationally; building capacity in the Sultanate of Oman; financially support industrial improvement through R&D; encouraging Oman’s industry to adopt technology transfer and generate Intellectual Property (I.P) and Patents; promoting a sustainable innovative culture in Oman; and enhancing Oman’s industrial competitiveness.

The two key aims being achieved by the IIAP are firstly, to improve Oman’s industry through research and development (R&D) and secondly, to build capacity for sustainable industrial growth and knowledge creation. Substantial progress has been made by the IIC since it began in 2010. It was originally anticipated that the IIC would deliver only 10 industrial R&D projects during the first 2.5 years, with an additional 15 projects to be undertaken by 2013. However by the end of 2013 (the fifth year of the programme) the overall target was greatly exceeded.
