In continuation of its efforts to deliver measurable value to the various segments of the local community, particularly to the less fortunate, the IKEA Foundation recently geared its corporate social responsibility efforts toward Syrian refugees in the Kingdom, as part of the “Brighter Lives for Refugees” campaign organized in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
The two-month campaign accrued a donation of Є1 for every LEDARE LED light bulb purchased at IKEA stores. The donations have been passed on to the UNHCR to fund their efforts to provide sustainable lighting and energy solutions to Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, including solar street lights, indoor solar lanterns and other renewable-energy technologies like fuel-efficient cooking stoves.
The management of the IKEA Foundation explained that this campaign has met remarkable success due to the unprecedented interest and support by both its customers and employees. The campaign comes as a continuation of the Foundation’s longstanding efforts in the arena of social responsibility, through which it seeks to provide considerable support to various civil society organizations working to better the quality of life of the communities within which IKEA operates. The Foundation’s sponsorships lend particular focus to securing cleaner and safer environments for children, enabling them to perform their daily activities ― such as dining or finishing schoolwork ― without interruption due to power outages.
The “Brighter Lives for Refugees” campaign has extended to reach refugees in a number of other countries, including Bangladesh, Chad and Ethiopia. The partnership between the IKEA Foundation and the UNHCR was established in 2010 as a viable step toward realizing the foundation’s vision of equal opportunities to children everywhere.
