Recognising and appreciating the efforts of its volunteers, Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA) rewarded the youth who have been actively engaged with the ‘Be Street Smart’ project for the past two months.
In partnership with AIESEC, the awareness raising activities included talks about the dangers of speeding, the importance of wearing seat belts, child’s restraints, risks of using mobile phones and adhering to traffic rules and regulations.
On the occasion, Amor bin Nasser Al Matani, ORSA’s Chairman commented, “I am very proud of the achievements of our volunteers and touched by their level of commitment and dedication to transfer knowledge to their friends, peers and community. We are looking to involve more youth in our programmes to raise awareness on road safety.”
He added, “Volunteerism is an excellent vehicle for youth to learn new life skills, establish new friendships, develop social competencies while helping their community. Their involvement in activities such as ‘Be Street Smart’, will prepare them to become tomorrow’s leaders in their own communities.”
Imtiaz Aziz, a representative from the AIESEC International Team and one of the volunteers, said, “Being part of ‘Be Street Smart’ project gave me the best experience of my life as we worked with the local AIESECers and interns from different parts of the world, under the supervision and directions of ORSA. The public awareness activity has supported me in promoting road safety best practices and made me a confident and self-reliable person. I learned about leadership, team work and gained project management skills in a collaborative environment.”
Stephanie Van Sprang, another representative from the AIESEC International Team and one of the volunteers, commented saying: “Before starting my internship at Oman Road Safety Association, I never thought that there were so many differences in the road safety culture between Oman and the Netherlands. ‘Be Street Smart’ is a great initiative to bridge these differences and I am very happy that I had the opportunity to join the Association and use my skills to develop a sustainable campaign.”
‘Be Street Smart’ selects college and university students and young people from Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA) and AIESEC in Oman to become Road Safety Educators who are enriching the project with their own experiences and knowledge and becoming ambassadors of road safety in the Sultanate. The Educators will continue to conduct regular workshops to train youth from selected colleges and universities in Muscat, Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Al Dhakhliya, Al Sharqiya North, Al Sharqiya South and Al Buraimi, with guidance and support from ORSA.
