Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) is proud to be hosting its inaugural annual conference later this year and is calling for industry practitioners and academic researchers eager to join the debate about environmental sustainability to submit papers, presentations and posters for inclusion.

Qatar Green Building Conference ‘The Vision 2014’, will take place on 24th and 25th November at the Qatar National Convention Centre, and will address major sustainability issues and focus on providing solutions to some of the most significant challenges for the built environment into the future. The prestigious two-day conference will also seek to promote best practice for the built environment for Qatar, the Gulf region and beyond.

Commenting about the event, QGBC’s Director Engineer Meshal Al Shamari said, “By hosting our first conference, QGBC is leading the debate and bridging the gap between theory and implementation of industry best practice that we hope will culminate in delivering a green legacy for Qatar.”

“We are committed to supporting the delivery of the Qatar National Vision 2030, and as the nation transitions to a knowledge-based economy, QGBC will continue to facilitate collaboration with all relevant parties in order to see culturally sensitive, sustainable construction practices being adopted across the Gulf and wider MENA region,” he added.

QGBC aims to support the health and sustainability of the environment, the people, and economic security in Qatar for generations to come: principles that feature in the inaugural conference’s four key themes:
• The application of Passivhaus to the MENA region
• Retrofitting Doha
• Carbon Footprinting in the GCC region
• Future Sustainable Cities

Dr Alex Amato, Head of Sustainability at QGBC, said, “QGBC’s conference will be relevant to so many professionals; from academics, interested in the sustainability of the built environment, to property consultants, urban planners and landscape architects. Everyone participating in the conference will be able to see how their role impacts and supports the bigger picture of creating a more sustainable environment in Qatar and beyond.”

He continued, “Capturing the latest research being conducted by leading professionals will help us to better understand current challenges and deliver solutions around which we can really make a difference for the built environment in the future.”

Academic researchers and industry practitioners are invited to submit papers around the four key themes by 7th July 2014. Subject to peer-review, approved papers, and abstracts of approved presentations and posters will then be published in a special issue of QScience Proceedings conference reports.

QGBC was launched in 2009 by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, to promote and equip a sustainable building industry for Qatar.

QGBC is a non-profit, membership-driven organisation dedicated to advocating green building solutions, leading industry research, as well as promoting sustainable practice in the community. Through QGBC, Qatar has joined a network of 80 different countries that run active national green building councils under the umbrella of the World Green Building Council.
