Second Al Gharbia Development Forum to highlight economic overview and investment opportunities in region

The Western Region Development Council (WRDC) is focusing on the implementation of large scale development projects in Al Gharbia, the Western Region of the Abu Dhabi Emirate, over the next few years in partnership with its government and private sector entities.

The continued focus for Al Gharbia aims to accelerate the region’s development in its key economic sectors including energy, tourism, petrochemicals, agriculture and food processing as well as the enabling sectors including real estate, transport, logistics, and government and community services. At a press conference held earlier today at the St Regis Hotel, Abu Dhabi Corniche, His Excellency, Mohamed Hamad bin Azzan Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative Court in the Western Region and Director General of the WRDC – announced the launch of the second Al Gharbia Development Forum (AGDF), which is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region. The Forum will be held on the 20th of May, 2014 at the prestigious St Regis Saadiyat Resort hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

H.E., Al Mazrouei began by praising the efforts of the leadership of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in supporting and fortifying the economic development in the region – now witnessing a noticeable increase in developments and fresh interest in the opportunities available for investors – in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and with the support of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

He added that the Al Gharbia Development Forum (AGDF) is a unique platform for entrepreneurs and investors to find out about the huge developments taking place in the region, and the business and investment opportunities that lie within. In addition, access to the various means of support provided by government agencies working within, and responsible, for Al Gharbia. Due to the importance of this forum, the Western Region Development Council will announce a number of vital projects that are planned in collaboration with strategic partners to enhance the process of sustainable development in various economic sectors, the priority of the region through the activities in this second forum being held this month.

He continued, by adding that a number of new development projects will be announced at the forum, which in total, cover an area of nearly 600,000 square meters. This includes projects in the tourism sector with an area of 450,000 square meters, projects in the real estate sector with an area of 48,000 square meters and projects in the industrial sector, which cover more than 98,000 square meters.

Al Mazrouei also spoke about the role of these projects in the implementation of the ‘Plan Al Gharbia 2030’ and the overall economic overview of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the strategic thrust made towards driving developments in region thus far as well as highlighting the key sectors and industries to be discussed in the upcoming forum.

Mr. Obaid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, Director of Investment Promotion and Public Relations at WRDC highlighted that since the first AGDF last year that was supported by the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, in addition to the concerted efforts of all stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of Al Gharbia – this year’s forum will witness even more participation from the region’s government and private sector entities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, including the Department of Economic Development (DED), Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, Abu Dhabi Chamber, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the Abu Dhabi Education Council, the Department of Municipal Affairs, Western Region Municipality (WRM), the Urban Planning Council (UPC), the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), Abu Dhabi General Services (Musanada), Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), Etihad Rail, Abu Dhabi National Chemicals Company (ChemaWEyaat), Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Ltd. (Borouge), Statistics Center – Abu Dhabi (SCAD), Food Security Centre Abu Dhabi (FSCAD), Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA), etc. – in addition to a group of private sector developers and entrepreneurs.

Mr. Mohamed Ebrahim Al Hosani, Director of Regional Development at WRDC also speaking at the press conference said, “the forum provides innovative and unique methods to network and communicate with representatives from the government and private sector – for example, investors interested in the region can attend a session titled ‘Design your project: build a business case’. The B2B session will help interested investors develop a business case for Al Gharbia in line with the Al Gharbia Investment roadmap and in collaboration with WRDC, UPC and WRM. They will also highlight the investment opportunities available and provide more information about ready-made investment packages, in addition to step-by-step guidance about the preparation of market studies, financial frameworks and comprehensive analysis of the proposed sites. The session shall also introduce highlights of guidelines and standards of construction being followed within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The levels of support offered will be discussed during the B2B session on priority economic sectors as per the 2030 plan. The council will also brief the participants during the conference about the role at all stages of private sector projects from design through implementation and follow-up phases.

“Al Gharbia has become a major hub for investors and entrepreneurs who want to take advantage of the unique investment opportunities offered by the region. While development continues in other areas, the Abu Dhabi authorities maintain the Al Gharbia vision to prioritize the development of the massive potential of the region in non-oil sectors in order to encourage and utilize the rapid momentum of the massive developments that are on-going. The forum will highlight and explore these opportunities in detail and discuss them in detail with a panel of high level government speakers and experts from the private and public sectors in Abu Dhabi” said Ben Greenish, Managing Director, MEED Events.

Economic sectors scheduled to be discussed at the Forum include; city development, light industries, transportation, public services, food security, tourism and leisure development.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region is scheduled to deliver an opening speech at the conference, followed by many high level representatives from the Government of Abu Dhabi, including H.E. Mohamed Hamad bin Azzan Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary of the Ruler’s Representative Court in the Western Region and Director General of the WRDC, H.E. Saeed Al Ghafli, Director General, Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), H.E. Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, Director General, Abu Dhabi Education Council, H.E. Khalifa Salem Al Mansoori, Acting Director General of Western Region Municipality, H.E. Khalifa Ahmed Al Ali, Managing Director, Food Security Centre Abu Dhabi (FSCAD) and H.E. Owaida Murshed Al Murar, Acting CEO, Musanada.

The AGDF sponsors include many representatives from the public and private sector, including the Higher Corporation for specialized Economic Zones (Zonescorp), Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Masdar, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, Abu Dhabi Chamber, Etihad Rail, Al Foah, and Drake and Scull etc.
