Speaking at a workshop on August 27th entitled “Community Development and Youth Initiatives”, HE Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, said that their Majesties and Highnesses leaders of the GCC States are giving great attention to the needs ofyoung people in the GCC, and providing extensive support to the efforts that aim to enable young people to achieve their aspirations and contribute to the progress and welfare of their nations.

The workshop has been organized by the Secretariat General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, in collaboration with the General Organization for Youth and Sports in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and with the participation of young people from the GCC countries.

Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said the workshop is being held following the directives of their Majesties and Highnesses leaders of the GCC States during the GCC Supreme Council Summit in Kuwait in December 2013. He added that these directives reflect their firm belief that youth welfare should be a key target of development, and young people are active and instrumental elements in the development process and the hope for a better future. Their Majesties and Highnesses are keen to identify the ambitions of young people in the GCC, and create an optimal environment and encourage programs that help them stretch their abilities and open up new opportunities for creativity, welfare and progress.

The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council expressed his pride in the GCC youth’s participation in the GCC Youth Conference organized by the GCC-SG in Riyadh last year, and in the workshops that took place in Muscat and Dubai this year. He commended their genuine interest in and positive interaction with activities of these workshops, as well as the ideas and visions they shared and the eagerness they showed to contribute to the success of the activities.

He added that the conclusions and recommendations that emerge from the first and second workshops will be submitted to Their Majesties and Highnesses leaders of the GCC States and to the relevant authorities in each respective country, in a bid to put them into effect – with the aim to further boost the achievements made though joint GCC work for young people in the member countries.

He expressed his hope that the recommendations of the workshop, which addresses a major issue – namely, “Building Community and Youth Initiatives” – will be a valuable addition.

He added that such vital platforms help identify the visions and perspectives of young people. He expressed his confidence that the creative youth in the GCC countries have innovative ideas for ambitious initiatives, which can positively contribute to building the GCC community and creating a safe and stable environment that stimulates work, progress and welfare.

In conclusion, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council urged the young participants to positively interact, demonstrate transparency and openness in their discussions, and not to hesitate to present their ideas and suggestions – which will receive careful attention from the Secretariat- General and from the relevant agencies in youth affairs in the member states.
