SOS Children’s Villages in Syria Distributed over 10000 Food Aid Baskets in Different Provinces

The SOS Children’s Villages in Syria proved its commitment in implementing its Emergency Relief intervention strategic plan 2013 – 2014, by executing group of initiatives and programs aimed to support and help Syrian children and their families who got affected by the Syrian conflict.

Due to its responsibility on child protection and responding to humanitarian appeal by providing families with essentials and relief needs, the SOS Children’s Villages distributed over 10000 food aid baskets, between January and August 2014, to Internally Displaced People in Damascus & countryside, Homs and Daraa. Each basket meets a family’s nutrition needs for containing basic foodstuff and infant milk.

“The instant response to humanitarian and relief appeal in Syrian different provinces, beside our willingness to give an individual’s basic living requirements, is a huge challenge to us as a team.” Said Nazzeh Karraz, Emergency Program coordinator for the Southern Region at SOS Children’s Villages Syria, “we immediately take action on planning and preparing our proper distribution plans to reach out to more beneficiaries, we make our own success story on each mission we take, it motivates us more on accomplishing more upcoming missions perfectly.” He stated.

Recently and for the first time, SOS Children’s Villages in Syria distributed 1500 food aid baskets in several areas in Homs, 1000 baskets in Old city of Homs and 500 baskets in Karm Al Zaitoun and Al Worod area.

“We all felt sad when we went to Homs and saw this city with no life, especially that we missed it and its people after years from not being able to visit it because of the unfortunate war. What made our visit special were us giving a helping hand and support people in need.” Stated Obai Othman, Field Worker at SOS Children’s Villages Syria, “I really appreciate the experience I had since I believe in the importance of the humanitarian work I’m doing at SOS Emergency Relief Program” He continued.

In addition to the distribution process in Homs, the SOS Children’s Villages succeeded in distributing 5750 food aid baskets in Damascus & the countryside, and 3000 food aid baskets in Daraa, concluding by this action the implementation of its ERP phase 1 for the year 2013-2014.

It is worth to mention that the SOS Children’s Villages in Syriais a non-profit and non-governmental organization provides long termfamily care and safe homes for children in need. The Association guarantees the protection of their rights and is committed to help them through group of programs, mentioning the child sponsoring program, Family Strengthen Program and other programs that aim to raise a child in stable caring environment.

The SOS Children’s Villages launched its Emergency Relief Program in Ramadan 2013 by starting its first campaign “All Together”, to achieve exceptional results of distributing more than 60000 fasting meals in Damascus and its countryside, Aleppo and its countryside, Swieda and Daraa. The campaign was followed by the “Eideyeh” initiative which distributed new cloth and candy for more than 8000 child in Damascus and Aleppo. In addition of distributing 4000 milk cans to infants in Aleppo.

The SOS Children’s Villages in Syria distributed 16000 school bags for children during the “My Right to Education” campaign, in collaboration with the Syria Trust, to help children to go back to school.

Later on, the SOS Children’s Villages in Syria distributed winter to over 20000 families in Damascus, Aleppo, the coastal region and Daraa during a campaign called “Keep me warm”, each winter kit contained three blankets and a coat for each family member.

Finally, SOS Children’s Villages in Syria collaborated withMassar Project – The Syria Trust, to launch their first Child Friendly Space (CFS), the project is designed to provide Psycho-Social Support for the children who have faced difficulties as a result of the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Children participate in various planned activities based on their reality and needs, activities aim to strengthen set of values and behaviors related to the community, moreover, the CFS will provide them with the necessary skills to be able to enjoy their lives normally and to concentrate on their future.
