The Ministry of Economy’s Commercial Control Department, in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police and Al Masaood Tyres & Accessories Division organized a workshop on the inspection mechanism for counterfeit tyres at the Khalidiya Rotana Hotel in Abu Dhabi on 12 May 2014. The Ministry of Interior also collaborated with the Ministry of Economy as strategic partner in hosting the initiative.

The interactive session was part of a series of workshops organized by the Ministry throughout the year in collaboration with strategic partners and government departments across the UAE to ensure safety of motorists and road users.

Juma Fairouz, Director of Commercial Control, on behalf of His Excellency Humaid Ali Bin Butti Al Muhairi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs, welcomed participants to the workshop that aimed to raise awareness on the important issue of vehicle maintenance and safety and ensuring the quality of tyres fitted out in vehicles across the UAE.

Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Head of Public Relations in the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, and Ahmed Abdel Moneim, Deputy Director for Technical Services at Al Masaood Tyres & Accessories Division headlined the inaugural session. A number of representatives from the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Interior, officers from the Abu Dhabi Police, the Federal Customs, Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology, Abu Dhabi Customs, Dubai Customs and the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi in addition to officials from Al Masaood Tyres & Accessories Division also participated in the workshop.

His Excellency Humaid Ali Bin Butti Al Muhairi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs, said: “The Ministry of Economy reiterates its commitment to protect the market from fraudulent practices through close monitoring of all markets and available products and services. This workshop aims to strengthen professional know-how on inspection mechanisms to verify the quality of the tires and detect counterfeits easily. This will ensure the safety of vehicles, passengers and road users.”

Al Muhairy added: “If the tires are not in conformity with highest quality specifications, vehicular safety is severely compromised, which in the worst case scenarios can even lead to death.”

He noted that the Ministry’s ongoing workshops and campaigns organized in collaboration with strategic partners to tackle the issue of counterfeit tires are aimed at raising the awareness of the UAE’s residents and citizens on protecting themselves from counterfeit products and poor-quality services that lead to losses of life and property.

The workshops articulate the Ministry’s priority to promote best-in-class business practices, in addition to ensuring consumer protection and compliance with international standards on respecting intellectual property.

The Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs also emphasized that the specific goal of the workshop was to step-up public understanding about the significance of numbers and symbols on the tires and the specifications of tires as well as the conditions of storage, transport and trading.
Al Muhairi said the workshops served to strengthen cooperation between government agencies and offer opportunities for greater synergies between the public and private sector.

The workshop concluded with an exchange of commemorative shields between His Excellency Humaid Ali Bin Butti Al Muhairi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs, Jamal Al Ameri, Head of Public Relations in the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police and Ahmed Abdel Moneim, Deputy Director for Technical Services at Al Masaood Tyres & Accessories Division.
