Ambulances respond to 25 emergencies every day

A study recently published by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show that the number of Ambulance emergency callouts in the Sultanate averages 25 per day, highlighting the key role Ambulance services staff provide in delivering timely care to accident and trauma victims or people suffering a health emergency, while conveying them to the hospital in a timely manner. With final numbers still pending from 2013, the number of callouts recorded for Ambulances services in 2012 stood at 9,228, which averages 25 callouts for every day of the year.

During 2012, 60% of all Ambulance emergency callouts occurred in the Muscat Governorate, registering a total of 5,535 callouts over this period. This was followed by Al Batinah North which accounted for 17% of callouts, with 1,570 recorded, while Al Batinah South accounted for 7% of callouts with 572 recorded in 2012. The Governorate of Dhofar accounted for 3% of all callouts with 317 recorded. Meanwhile, the Governorate with the lowest number of Ambulance emergency callouts was Al-Wusta, recording only 60 instances in 2012.

According to the NCSI figures, a total of 6,160 Ambulance emergency callout incidents were classified as trauma related, whether by road accident or other physical injury, which account for 67% of all emergency callouts in 2012. A further 2,981 callouts were classified as medical related, where Ambulance personnel rushed to provide immediate assistance to people suffering a health emergency, this accounted for 32% of all callouts recorded in 2012. A further 87 callouts which account for 1% of the 2012 total were unclassified.
