Hotel review: Four Seasons Hotel George V Paris

First opened in the 1920’s, the 244-room hotel has been managed by Four Seasons since 2008 and is owned by Kingdom Holding Company, the investment company controlled by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

The hotel is centrally located in the heart of Paris, and looks right at home amidst the city’s world-famous museums and high-end fashion retailers. In fact, the statues, paintings, and tapestries that are featured prominently throughout the hotel evoke the feel of a museum.

However, the George V does not feel stuffy or cold, in part because flowers are in abundance everywhere you turn. The friendly and enthusiastic staff, who are also seemingly everywhere, also make one feel comfortable and at ease.

Four Seasons hotels are known for their service, and the George V had the best we’ve ever encountered. All of our requests, great or small, were greeted with delight and prompt attention, which was most refreshing in a city where front-line staffers at many food and retail outlets are not always the most patient.

For example, when we inquired about getting access to the Internet one evening, the staff pointed out that they were happy to open the business centre or fitness room for us at any time of day or night upon request.

The staff was particularly friendly and warm to our children, which helped us feel welcome despite the sophisticated surroundings. There are many amenities on offer for kids, including portable DVD players to keep them occupied at dinnertime, free DVD rentals for use in our room, and T-shirts with the hotel’s logo as a welcome gift.

The hotel offers lots of options in terms of room sizes, with no less than 10 kinds of suites, the grandest of which is the Royal Suite, which costs about $16,000 per night. Our room was spacious and reflected the elegant vibe of the hotel, with furniture, paintings and curtains that were stylish but a little too formal for our tastes.

However, the room is fitted out with the latest technology, including on-demand TV, and there were nice touches such as a selection of English and French books. We also found the bed to be about the most comfortable we had ever slept in.

Guests who wish to be further pampered can use the spa, or splash out for dinner at Le Cinq, which has been awarded two Michelin stars. We opted to dine at the more affordable restaurants that were in plentiful supply near the hotel.

In fact, the George V’s location is another of its great selling points, as it is close to the Champs Elysées and within walking distance to the Eiffel Tower.

Although a night at the hotel is not cheap, we would highly recommend it if you are looking to be pampered on your next trip to the City of Lights.
