Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, the Arab Paediatric Medical Congress kicks off today in Amwaj Rotana Hotel – Dubai till 31 May, 2014.more than 40 regional and local experts in the field will share their wealth of knowledge via the evidence-based and hands-on workshops with breakout sessions and interactive discussions to meet the needs of all attendees.
Dr Mustafa Al Hashemi, deputy director of the ministry’s Dubai Medical District. delivered a keynote speech at the first day of the event. “The Ministry of health has made great efforts to develop health services inside covering the needs of our population, additionally we are working on mega projects to meet the rise in demand of healthcare services and improve the quality and delivery of care by expanding health facilities, hospitals, medical centres across the seven emirates and providing the qualified caliber and access to medication for our patients”. Said Al Hashemi.
“MOH currently is working with Unicef to fight childhood obesity by educating children at public schools about health life style, as one of the ministry’s goal is to create a health generation of children”. Added Al Hashemi.
Abdulla Bin Souqat Executive Director Sheikh Hamdan Award for Medical Science, pointed at his speech that the Award is composed of a number of interrelated categories, and all the activities of the Award aim at improving healthcare standard in general through the sponsorship of the current Congress.
“Neonatal Medicine was one of the main subjects discussed at the Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences, where research projects are encouraged and financed in the United Arab Emirates. Said Bin Souqat. “I also take pride in mentioning the data contained within the Catalogue for Transmission Genetics in Arabs Database (CTGA), hosted by the Centre for Arab Genomic Studies, which lists over 1600 genetic and congenital disorders. It is well-known that Paediatrics plays a pivotal role in diagnosing and spotting these genetic disorders as evident in the larger part of the said database”. Added.
The first day of the event Included a number of presentations by local and international specialists and experts, Dr. George V. Mazariegos, Chief Paediatric Transplantation, Professor of Surgery and Critical Care, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, University of Pittsburgh discuss Liver and Intestine Transplantation, reviewing the current indications and outcomes for liver transplantation in children and understanding the leading causes of intestinal failure in children and strategies for management of intestinal failure including medical and surgical approaches as well as transplantation of the intestine.
Dr. Monika Kaushal, Consultant Neonatologist, Head of Paediatric and Neonatology Department, Zulekha Hospital, present Improving children’s health by fostering research in the region, recognition of risk factors affecting children’s health in the region and building research foundation based on local needs also identifying strategies for improving children’s health research.
The winners of “The Arab Paediatric Medical Research Award” honored at the awards ceremony during the first day, the awards launched by Maarefah Management company the organizers of the Arab Paediatric Medical Congress, with the aim of honoring the researchers in this field and to highlight their effort.
Dr. Khaled El-Atawi, Specialist Senior Registrar Neonatology, Latifa Hospital won first place, Dr. Fadia S. AlBuhairan, Assistant Professor, Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Department of Paediatrics King Abdulaziz Medical City and Vice President Saudi Society for Adolescent Health won second place, Dr. Nisha Patel, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Genetics King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre won third place.
The second day will include presentations by experts in the healthcare sector, such as approach to postnatal management of the newborn by Dr. Sridhar
Kalyanasundaram, Paediatrician, Neonatologist, Director of Neonatology, American Hospital. “A holistic approach is essential to newborn care, focusing not just on events in the neonatal period, but on future life as well.
