MEED and the National Health Insurance Company – Daman have partnered to launch the Daman Corporate Health Awards, the first in the Middle East to recognise corporate health and employee wellness initiatives
The recognition programme aims to promote health in the workplace by recognising employers, professionals and teams for outstanding achievements in enhancing employee wellness at work. It covers a wide range of health issues, such as nutrition, weight loss, and exemplary work environments that foster overall employee and organisational wellness.
Corporate wellness has been shown to boost productivity and performance, both of employees and of the overall business. When organisations adopt a health-oriented strategy that focuses on the wellbeing of staff, it improves perception of the company, employee-management relationship, and increases loyalty.
“Encouraging and promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive work/life balance is an essential part of the modern business environment and is a central plank of the UAE’s Vision 2021 development strategy, which aims to promote well-rounded lifestyles and strong, active communities,” said MEED editorial director Richard Thompson. “I am delighted that MEED has launched the Daman Corporate Health Awards which, in recognising initiatives to boost employee wellness initiatives, will support the future development of the UAE as a major business hub attracting the best local and international talent to its workforce,” he added.
Dr. Michael Bitzer, Chief Executive Officer, Daman, headline sponsor of the awards said, “It gives us great pleasure to partner with MEED on the first Daman Corporate Health Awards. With employees spending at least a third of their day at work, the workplace has a key role to play in their overall health. We believe it is time to recognise and encourage UAE-based corporations and organisations that realise the importance of health and wellness by running programmes and initiatives to benefit their staff. The awards celebrate the companies who actively take an interest in their staff’s overall wellbeing whilst also providing excellent reference points and key case studies for those who have yet to launch their own programmes.”
“Our commitment to support health-oriented workplaces extends to launching a series of initiatives designed at supporting the Human Resources managers in an organisation to becoming an Ambassador of Health for their staff. We are planning to do this through the provision of information, advice, and the necessary technology which empowers them to deliver effective transformational health and wellness programmes,” he added.
Corporate health and wellness has been thrust into the spotlight in the UAE of late following the passing of the mandatory medical insurance law in Dubai that makes health insurance compulsory for both private and public sector employees. The law makes Dubai the second Emirate in the UAE to introduce mandatory health insurance following Abu Dhabi which implemented its own law back in 2006.
Analysts expect the law will not just be a boon for healthcare across the board, but will also enhance corporate wellness programmes that seek to help employees be more active and healthy.
Organisations can evaluate their initiatives and submit their nominations in any of the following categories: Daman Award for Corporate Health and Wellness (Organisation), Daman Award for Corporate Health and Wellness Initiative (Initiative), Daman Award for Improved Corporate Health and Wellness Performance, Communications Campaign of the Year, Corporate Wellness Leader of the Year, Corporate Wellness Team of the Year, Corporate Wellness Rising Star of the Year , Innovation in Work Culture, Workplace of the Year, Health & Safety Initiative of the Year, CSR Employee Engagement of the Year. Entries may only be submitted online through www.corporatehealthawards.com. Deadline is on 1 July 2014.
