The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Washington D.C. The signing took place during a recent visit by a delegation from NRC to the US where it met with NIDA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The agreement will see NRC and NIDA collaborate to exchange knowledge in four areas including raising awareness for addiction prevention in schools and within the family and larger community, monitoring the risk of addiction in the community, scientific research and specialized studies on addiction, in addition to fellowship programs and scholarships in the field of addiction.

During the visit, H.E. Dr. Hamad Al Ghaferi, Director General of NRC, showcased NRC’s achievements and its leading role in reducing the impact of addiction on society through its prevention and treatment programs. NIDA and SAMHSA shared their expertise in combatting addiction through prevention, research, in addition to surveillance and monitoring. Both entities provided evidence of the effectiveness of their methodologies by showcasing their positive outcomes, with NRC discussing the applicability of these methodologies and prospects of adapting them for the UAE.

Commenting on the visit, H.E. Dr. Al Ghaferi, said: “NRC continues to work towards maintaining a leading position in the UAE, as well as gaining increasing recognition on the regional and international levels. To achieve this, we are capitalizing on our efforts to ensure that NRC is applying the best practices in the field of prevention and treatment of addiction. Through this agreement, we hope to benefit from NIDA’s international expertise to further develop our prevention and treatment practices, scientific research, and our national capacity building for the benefit of the UAE community.”

H.E. added: “NRC will continue to forge partnerships with world renowned global institutions to reinforce local capacities that will be able to adapt best in practice treatment and prevention programs and align them with the customs and traditions of the UAE.”

NIDA offers specialized programmes in the field of health education and addiction prevention among the youth, students and families; which have been scientifically proven to be effective in reducing the rate of addiction among these groups. These comprehensive programs are characterized by their adaptability to suit different cultures, including Arab societies. The Institute also provides a number of knowledge sharing and capacity building programs, which include fellowship and scholarships programs in various addiction-related fields such as prevention, treatment and research.

SAMHSA implements a number of prevention programs across the US, which have been scientifically accredited by NIDA. It also implements several monitoring programs across the health sector to identify the patterns of addiction. Additionally, SAMHSA conducts household studies through surveys to identify the prevalence of substance abuse in the USA.

NRC continues to work towards implementing best global practice in the prevention and treatment of substance use. Additionally, the Center works on building national capacities and empowering them to use advanced scientific methodologies in leading innovation in the field of addiction care.
