In celebration of the World Health Day , Dettol’s ‘Mission for Health’ collaborated with the Ministry of Education, UAE, to promote health and hygiene practices in the workplace. Over 600 ministry staff participated in the activity to show their support towards maintaining a healthy work environment. Held under the Ministry’s open health day ‘Maintain Your Health…Protect Your Life’, the event brought to light recommended practices to prevent illness and infections amongst the workforce.

With so many people working in close proximity, the workplace is a high-risk environment for the spreading of germs. Frequently touched surfaces including lift buttons, handrails, desks, telephone handsets, door handles and toilet flushes are breeding grounds for germs. Many day-to-day practices such as travelling on public transport or choosing to go to work despite having an illness or infection can leave co-workers vulnerable. Understanding how germs spread is therefore a vital first step in helping to maintain a cleaner, more hygienic work environment.

Specialised health educators under Dettol’s ‘Mission for Health’ initiative showcased good hygiene practices through a live hand-washing demonstration. In addition, Dettol’s essential hygiene packs comprising hand sanitizers that safely promote personal hygiene, were distributed among employees.

Head of Schools Health and Nutrition Department at the Ministry of Education in the UAE, Sawsan Al Amiri, a member of the Arab Hygiene Council (AHC), said, “We probably spend more time at work than we do at home, therefore, good hygiene in the workplace is essential for reducing the risk of illness and infections. As part of the Ministry’s objectives to spread health awareness on World Health Day, we are pleased to collaborate with Dettol’s Mission for Health as the leading initiative to promote health and hygiene awareness in the Middle East.”

In 2013, with the support of the AHC and the Ministries of Education and Health, Dettol’s ‘Mission for Health’ successfully delivered interactive hygiene education to over two million families across the Middle East through on-going programmes for schools and new mums.

In line with World Health Day, AHC has issued guidelines to promote good health and hygiene in the workplace:
•Wash your hands for a minimum of 40 seconds at least six times per day with antibacterial soap and water, ensuring that both hands are fully cleaned, especially between the fingers and under the fingernails. Once washed, dry your hands thoroughly with a single use tissue.
•If soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer or antibacterial wet wipes.
•Make sure to shower at least twice a day and wash frequently
•Keep your clothes clean.
•If you have a cold or flu, make sure you cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and dispose of the tissue properly into a bin.
•Stay at home if you are unwell as germs can easily be transferred to others, especially cold and flu germs. You will also benefit by being able to rest, recuperate and focus on getting well quickly.
•Research shows that germs that make up the cold and flu viruses can live on surfaces for up to forty-eight hours. Make sure you clean your workstation items, such as computer keyboard and telephone handsets, using a disinfectant wipe.
