Al Wakra Hospital has introduced Qatar’s first I.V. robot that prepares and packages intravenous preparations for use by medical staff in the hospital. A first-of-its-kind in the Middle East, the automated machine is a high-precision apparatus designed to safely manage the mixing and dispensing of in-hospital preparations.

The I.V. robot provides user protection against direct exposure to medications and needle pricking, securing a safe work environment. Once the mixtures are prepared, they are then administered by medical staff. The system will service all Al Wakra Hospital units by mid-February.

Director of the Pharmacy Department at Wakra Hospital, Dr. Fathia Salama said, “The machine has been rigorously tested to ensure its operational capabilities as per the procedures specific to pharmaceuticals in use in Qatar.” “The system has been programmed to prepare IV admixtures as per the needs and requirements of our patients. The system has established conformance to international standards, and has been further tested by the Infection Control Department at HMC,” said Dr. Salama.

Al Wakra Hospital Pharmacy Projects & Informatics Manager Tamer Nabil Abbas said, “It took more than six months to prepare the robot to put IV admixtures in order. HMC’s engineers, their counterparts from the robot manufacturers, and the head of Inpatient Pharmacy at Al Wakra Hospital worked jointly to modify the system whereby it would work in harmony with the pharmaceuticals supplied by Qatar Pharma. The robot has been successfully tested on 30 different IV admixtures.” “The robot has been designed to function in an efficient, user-safe, and precise manner and provides unprecedented outcomes that serve the ultimate goal of patient safety,” Abbas added.”

HMC Executive Director Pharmacy Department Dr. Moza Al Hail said, “The overall objective in adopting the new robot system is to improve the healthcare services rendered to patients at all HMC’s facilities ensuring the safety of all recipients.”

“The IV Station robot is the first of its kind in Qatar and is intended for preparing IV admixtures without human intervention thus ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and safety. The initial deployment of this system at Wakra Hospital is in line with our policy of gradual implementation. Following a successful introduction here, we plan to roll out the technology to all our hospitals,” he added.
