Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) announced that Professor Ashfaq Shuaib has been appointed as Director of the Neurosciences Institute. In partnership with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, the Institute will address the most common neurological and neuropsychiatric ailments seen in Qatar, such as stroke, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury. It will improve the care of patients by embedding research and education into everyday clinical practice.

“Injuries and disorders of the brain represent a major healthcare challenge for Qatar. Bringing together an inter-professional network of clinicians and neuroscientists, the Neuroscience Institute will become a key resource for Qatar and the region, enhancing patient care and improving quality of life for our patients,” said Hanan Al Kuwari, PhD, Managing Director of HMC.

“Through long-term, sustainable partnerships with local organizations and leading international centers, the Neuroscience Institute will initiate research to support evidence-based clinical improvements. The Institute will be instrumental in providing a framework to facilitate translation of the latest developments in the field into benefits at the bedside,” said Professor Shuaib.

Professor Shuaib is a world leader in stroke care. His major interests are in understanding the basic mechanisms of cerebral ischemia and clinical trials in cerebrovascular diseases. He has published over 345 articles in peer-reviewed journals and his translational research has focused on pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment of acute stroke. He joins HMC from Canada’s University of Alberta where he held the position of Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Neurology.

The Institute’s initial focus will be clinical, educational and research programs relevant to the disease patterns and trends prevalent in Qatar’s population. Networked across various departments of HMC, the Institute will provide excellence in patient care, education and research through a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on the strengths of the AHS partners and working with the different hospitals.
