HSBC Bank Oman launches secure key for internet banking and upgrades mobile banking app

Oman: Monday, July 01 - 2013 @ 14:59

Having been the first bank to provide Internet Banking in the Sultanate, it is now one of the first banks in Oman to offer this service. Secure Key provides customers with an extra layer of security when they access their accounts online, bringing the best of HSBC’s global capabilities and technical expertise to customers across the Sultanate in a simple, secure and efficient way.

The bank has also upgraded its mobile banking app which is available for Android powered devices. With its new look and feel and simplified navigation, the new app allows customers’ funds transfer facilities between their HSBC accounts, in addition to a better user experience.

The app also allows customers to view their accounts and card balances as well as transaction details, check exchange rates and deposit rates, view special offers and account history. HSBC Bank Oman first launched mobile banking solutions in 2012 and has since continued to invest in enhancing its digital offering.

Alan Jarman, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management at HSBC Bank Oman, said,“While we have a large branch footprint across Oman and see this as a strength, we believe that digital banking will play an important role in the future. In Oman, we have a demographic where the median age is under 20 and increasingly adapting to online technologies and so banking over the phone, through mobile apps or the internet are becoming ever more popular. With our enhanced and more secure digital banking proposition, we believe we are well placed to meet this customer need.”

The Secure Key device is small and lightweight enough to keep in customer’s wallet or purse, enabling them to carry out their banking transactions wherever and whenever they like. By generating a unique code every time, this additional security means customers can be confident that they are the only people accessing their accounts.

Jarman added, “In 2012, direct costs associated with global consumer cybercrime touched $110bn according to Norton. As the Sultanate becomes more and more financially attractive, banks must do all they can to safeguard their customers against the risk of growing cybercrime, especially with the increasing popularity of internet and mobile banking applications. Secure Key is provided to customers free of charge and enables them to conduct their online banking with greater security and confidence.”

Customers also have a key role to play by keeping their PINs and passwords secret and adding Secure Key to HSBC’s range of customer-centric services ensures that the bank’s internet banking remains the most secure and advanced in Oman.

With its enhanced digital banking offer coupled with an extensive branch and ATM network, HSBC Bank Oman is in a position to offer the very best customer service experience as it continues on its journey to become the leading bank in Oman.
