Oman’s leading logistics services provider, GAC, has signed a strategic partnership with Outward Bound Oman/Tahaddi to enhance the employability of the country’s youth with a four-day leadership development course.
The alliance underlines the commitment of the company – 60% of whose workforce are Omanis – to empowering local workers and supporting the market in which it has been active for more than 40 years. GAC Oman provides logistics support for Outward Bound Oman, and sponsors the training course preparing 18 girls from the Dohat Al Adab school for their participation this week.
The Outward Bound/Tahaddi project was founded by partners Dentons, Shell and The Suhail Bahwan Group, working closely with the Ministry of Education to set up challenging journeys through the desert, mountains and seas of Oman to take people out of their comfort zones and develop key life skills in a unique learning environment. Depending on the time of year, courses have taken place on Jebel Akhdar, Jebel Samhan, Masirah island, in the Sharqiya Sands and in the Rub Al Khali.
GAC Oman’s General Manager, Daniel Nordberg, says: “We have always believed in the importance of youth empowerment, so we’re thrilled to put that commitment into action by partnering with Outward Bound Oman. And, of course, our four decades of providing top-notch logistics and shipping services means that our people will make fantastic mentors for these youngsters, sharing with them their rich leadership experience and expertise.”
Outward Bound Oman recently celebrated four years of operations, and is the Arab World’s first and only Outward Bound operation, reflecting the importance His Majesty’s government places on investing in the Sultanate’s workforce. It challenges people in a unique way, giving people young and old exposure to the skills that increase their employability, and their performance in the workplace.
“Leadership is relatively easy in air-conditioned offices, and when things are going well,” says Mark Evans, Manager of Outward Bound Oman/Tahaddi.
“Leadership, communication and motivating others becomes more challenging in unfamiliar circumstances, when people are tired, and when there are real deadlines like approaching nightfall to be met. It is easy to talk theory in classrooms, workshops and training seminars, but there’s no substitute for getting out there into challenging, real time situations – that is where real lessons are learned, lessons that stick, and lessons that can be transferred to improve performance back at the workplace.
