The game of golf is currently among the fastest growing sports in India, and has earned the position of being the second most popular sport in the country behind the nation’s beloved Cricket.
“We want to help bridge the gap and further enhance India’s golf prowess in developing the game as a successful recreational sport, while also contributing to the elite junior development of India’s best junior golfers,” stated Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of ‘golf in DUBAI.’
“The Foundation has a mandate to grow junior golf at the grass roots level and nurture the youth’s development in the game,” Buamaim continued.
The Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation was set up in 2006 in memory of the late Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who was the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, until his passing on January 4, 2006.
The Indian Golf Union President General JJ Singh was very excited about the strong support by ‘golf in DUBAI’ and had these comments. “The support of the Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation is very well received by the Indian Golf Union, ensuring the continued success of the programme, and will help us realise our expansion plans to bring the game of golf to every corner of the country and rural areas that have been inaccessible so far.”
The Shaikh Maktoum Golf Foundation support of the Indian Golf Union’s Junior Golf Programme will help with three distinct pillars in mind. They include: (1) the development and distribution of specialty student manuals and ‘Golf in Schools’ programs; (2) support with equipment that nurtures aspiring junior golfers that show promise and seek entrance to a golf club; and (3) support for the IGU’s Camp of Excellence, that will allow for exchanges with the UGA’s Junior Development Program in the UAE.
‘golf in DUBAI’ in co-operation with the India Golf Union and the Women’s Golf Association of India will bring the best players in the game, both men and women, to India through the staging of world-class events with the European Tour sanctioning bodies (European Tour / Ladies European Tour). The inaugural EMAAR – MGF tournaments will inject new excitement into India’s golf scene when they arrive in Bangalore and New Delhi.
‘golf in DUBAI’ is backed by Dubal (Dubai Aluminum) as the main partners and National Bank of Dubai, Emaar, Jumeirah Hotels, Emirates airline, BMW, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Gulf News, Omega and CNN as partners in its drive to showcase the emirate’s vibrant golfing scene to a worldwide audience.
