MoW’s Roads Projects & Maintenance Director Eng. Raed Al Salah revealed that the Ministry’s plan for the main strategic roads projects include implementing forestation and landscaping works to the main highways in the Kingdom. The scheme for each project includes spaces that are designed to become green spaces in order to preserve the environment and add beauty to the main highways and interchanges in the Kingdom.
According to Al Salah, certain amounts from the projects’ budgets are allocated for beautification works, including the implementation of irrigation networks, which is done in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning Affairs.
‘The Ministry of Works designs and implements forestation works in some projects, and the amounts allocated for such works is transferred to the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning Affairs, who are responsible for addressing design companies and contractors in order to implement forestation works once the road works are completed,’ said Al Salah.
‘The projects that have been completed are Isa Town Interchange, Um Al Hassam Interchange and Sitra Causeway, Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway and the interchanges in Manama, where roundabouts had been replaced with traffic signals, and the Dry Dock Highway as well,’ he added.
Other projects are to be implemented soon, including Sitra Causeway Corniche and the Corniche located at the West of Sitra Mall.
The Ministry also transferred the old Sitra Causeway into a 2km long entertainment area. The project includes a walkway, parking spaces, lighting and other related works. Green spaces are to be implemented by the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning Affairs. The BD772,000 project commenced in May 2013 and completed in Mid-February 2014.
