The green light timing for any direction differs according to the time cycle and location of any traffic signal; in accordance to the amount of traffic on the intersection.
The timing of the traffic signal is then extended or shortened based on these factors.
The automatic programming of traffic signals in the Kingdom contributes greatly to alleviating traffic congestions and reducing accidents on the road network. Therefore, the use of digital clocks in traffic signals is not possible and does not suit the traffic signals sensor system.
The suggested digital clock, which indicates the remaining time until the red light flashes, only works with traffic signals that have fixed timing and do not act according to the amount of traffic on the intersection; in which case the green light timing is already programmed within the signal’s system.
MoW’s Roads Planning & Design Directorate is presently implementing a new type of traffic signal lights known as Light Emitting Diode (LED), which is the latest in traffic engineering field. The new lights consume less than quarter of the energy consumed by the present traffic signal lights. This initiative goes in line with the Government’s efforts towards energy conservation.
The Ministry of Works will implement the project over 2 phases. Phase 1 consists of replacing the lights of 130 traffic signals, where 45% progress has been achieved by replacing the lights of 86 signals so far, and is expected to complete in the 3rd quarter of this year. Phase 2, which will commence once phase 1 is completed, consists of replacing the lights of another 94 traffic signals.
