“As a tourism market, the UAE is unique as each emirate varies from one another in what they offer to tourists even as they contribute to creating an integrated tourism environment in the country and supporting the growth process,” he said.
Al Qassimi made the remarks after receiving the UAE’s Ambassador to the UK, HE Abdulrahman Ghanem Almutaiwee, at Sharjah’s stand at the World Travel Market 2011 exhibition in London in the presence of Saeed Obaid Al Jarwan, Deputy Chairman of SCTDA Board of Directors and Second Deputy Chairman of SCCO Board of Directors, SCTDA Director General Mohamed A. Al Noman, Ali Salem Al-Mahmoud, Board Member of SCTDA and Chairman of the Sharjah Economic Development Department.
During the meeting with the UAE Ambassador, SCTA Chairman lauded the crucial role played by the National Council for Tourism and Antiquities in promoting the tourism sector in the UAE. He noted the active role played by the Council in bringing all the UAE exhibitors and stands together under one roof for the first time at the WTM exhibition, offering the exhibitors and visitors maximum exposure and understanding of the cooperation and interaction among all emirates.
Al Qasimi said the participation in the WTM figured high on Sharjah’s list of participation in international exhibitions and events. The emirate’s stand at the WTM displays elements of Sharjah’s identity and offers European tourists an idea about tourist attractions and characteristics of the emirate, he said emphasising that Europe was one of the most popular markets for Sharjah with 48 per cent of its total tourist inflow originated from the continent.
The SCTDA Chairman said the participation in the WTM this year was successful by all standards. Sharjah is today recognized by all tourist markets, the European market in particular, and is a favourite destination for tourists from around the world, he added, “With tremendous growth rates, investment in tourism sector is one of the main investment channels. We are exploring all avenues and harnessing all efforts to stimulate the tourism sector, which is one of the most important sectors that contribute to the GDP growth.”
Al Qassimi said that the SCTDA has been following a long term and deliberate strategy to attract tourists from local and regional markets and from across the world. Thanks to its exciting calendar of events, unique tourist attractions, heritage, evolving infrastructure and modern hotels, Sharjah continues to beckon visitors from around the world, he said. He said all this wouldn’t have been possible without the emirate’s wise leadership and its constant support and guidance.
Meanwhile Sharjah concluded its participation in the WTM for the eighth consecutive year on a high note. The Sharjah delegation, headed by SCTDA Chairman Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmad Al-Qassimi, included a number of senior officials and representatives of the tourism industry, including the Sharjah Airport Authority, Sharjah Media Centre, Sharjah Museums Department, Shurooq (Al Qasba), Hotel Ramada Sharjah, Radisson Blu, Orient Tours and Oceanic Hotel & Resort, Khor Fakkan.
