Thousands of families from across the UAE and the region rushed to enjoy this year’s unique extravaganza of fun and games and entertainment events, being held from 14 to 23 December.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, the Chairman of the SCTDA, flagged off the festival yesterday (on Wednesday) in the presence of dignitaries and world media.
Al Majaz Park overlooking the picturesque Buheirah Corniche witnessed an eclectic mix of international shows and carnivals amid a riot of colours and music with fireworks lighting up the sky over the Khalid Lagoon. International media in large numbers covered the event as Sharjah TV broadcast the opening ceremony and subsequent shows live, in addition to interviewing Sheikh Sultan and other dignitaries associated with the SWF.
The SCTDA has added several new shows and features to this year’s festival making the event all the more special this year. This year ice has been added to the theme of the Water Festival with the unique Circus on Ice joining the fun. The Mouj Island is playing host to numerous games, entertainment shows and workshops, games and entertainment shows. The Irish Dance Show, Yo Yo People, the Colourful Box Show, Pets Magic are some of the other international events and entertainment shows on the offer.
Commenting on the unprecedented response to the festival, Mohamed Ali Al Noman, Director General of the SCTDA, said that the SWF has come to acquire the status of one of the top five events in the UAE and the region.
“The response on the day one and over the past five years puts a responsibility on us to make greater efforts to make this year even more memorable and successful. The SWF reaffirms Sharjah’s position as a favourite international family and entertainment destination,” he said.
Al Noman said this year the SCTDA expects a 15% increase in the number of visitors. The high point of the SWF is the F1H2O Powerboat World Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix 2011, taking place tomorrow (Friday, Dec 16). The prestigious UIM Championship is being held for the twelfth consecutive year by Sharjah, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.
More than 200,000 people visited the festival last year and 75,000 spectators turned up to watch the Sharjah Grand Prix. With new shows and features, Sharjah expects a bigger number this year.
