The Executive Committee of SICC 2014 revealed that more than 500 journalists, broadcasters and media executives are arriving to Sharjah to report on the ground-breaking oratorio ‘Clusters of Light’, which has its première performance on March 26, 2014 at the new Open Majaz Island Amphitheatre (Theatre).

Media around the world are eager to hear about the theatrical blockbuster, which marks Sharjah’s inauguration as Islamic Culture Capital 2014. Based on a poem by Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Ashmawi of Saudi Arabia, with music by the esteemed Bahraini composer Khalid Al Sheikh in collaboration with musicians from across the globe, ‘Clusters Of Light’ features four of the finest singers currently working in the Arabic-speaking regions: the Emirati Hussain Al Jasmi, theTunisian Lotfi Bouchnak the Egyptian Ali Hajjar and the Palestinian Mohammed Assaf. Through song, drama and spectacular stagecraft, the oratorio tells the story of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from his birth until his death. It is already being called one of the most significant works in decades for the advancement and propagation of Islam’s true values of peace and love.

HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Sultan al Qassimi, Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Sharjah Islamic Culture Capital 2014 celebrations, said: “This show is a message from Sharjah to the world. With more than 500 media now in attendance, we will have the ideal platform to transmit that message to the four corners of the globe.”

The five performances of ‘Clusters of Light’ from March 26 to April 5, 2014 will send the audience on a journey back in time, said Sheikh al Qassimi: “To the darkness, struggle and challenges that led us to the beginnings of Islam. It goes on to tell the story of Islam’s great early accomplishments. We are confident that the audience, and the 500 attendant media, will witness a show so spectacular as to be engraved in their memories forever.”

Involving more than 200 performers, four soloists, a choir, an orchestra, a crew of 700 and ground-breaking special effects never before seen in this part of the world, ‘Clusters of Light’ will be the first show ever to be performed in the new Open Majaz Island Amphitheatre, Sharjah.

The official venue for Sharjah’s celebrations at being named Islamic Culture Capital 2014, this is the first venue of its kind in the region: a semi-circular amphitheatre spanning an area of more than 7,200 square metres and built at a cost AED140 million. The venue can accommodate up to 4,500 spectators and features a vast viewing platform, through which artists ascend, as well as a state-of-the-art audio system. An AED13 million bridge between the island and Khalid Lagoon Street enables easy access for visitors.

Sharjah was named the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014 on the basis of its rich history and its contribution to preserving and promoting culture throughout the region.
