The fourth edition of the Arab Film Festival- Amman (AFFA) kicks off tomorrow evening, Monday 14th of July 2014, organized by the Royal Film Commission- Jordan (RFC) and under the patronage of the Minister of Culture H.E. Dr. Lana Mamkegh.

The Jordanian film “May in the Summer” by Cherien Dabis will be screened- for the first time in Jordan- at the festival’s opening tomorrow at 9:30 PM at the RFC. The festival’s programming includes a variety of award- winning Arab feature films in the presence of some of the filmmakers. Daily screenings will take place until Sunday 20th of July 2014, with films from Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco and Algeria.

The festival’s screenings will offer cinema buffs the opportunity to watch some of the most recent Arab productions, of high quality It will also give them the chance to meet with some Directors and Actors from several Arab countries.

Dr. Lana Mamkegh, praised the RFC contribution in the development of the cultural scene in Jordan, while also promoting it regionally and internationally, through the events and activities it organizes- including the AFFA- and its role in building bridges with the Arab Cinema as well as exchanging stories, concerns and aspirations shared by people in the Arab world. Mamkegh added that the Ministry of Culture arranges, supports and sponsors events targeting youth creativity in the field of filmmaking and film production, among which is the Jordanian Film Festival in its second edition for this year.

George David, General Manager of the RFC, noted that the fourth edition of the festival falls within the RFC ongoing efforts to highlight the Arab Cinema, by screening carefully selected recent Arab movies, some premiering in the Middle East and almost all awarded internationally.

David added that the programming also comes in line with the RFC’s keenness to provide a space for the exchange of ideas and perspectives, hence enriching the Jordanian audience’s cinematic culture, by hosting some of the Directors and Actors to introduce and discuss their picture.

The festival offers a diverse program that includes: the Tunisian film “Bastardo” by Nejib Belkadhi, in the presence of the Actress Lobna Noomene; the Moroccan Narrative “They are the Dogs” by Hicham Lasri, in the presence of the Actor Imad Fijjaj; the Syrian movie “Mariam” by Basil Alkhatib, the Algerian historical narrative “Mostefa Ben Boulaid” in the presence of the Director Ahmad Rachedi, the Lebanese collective film “Void” in the presence of the Producer Sam Lahoud and it will conclude with the Egyptian film “Rags and Tatters” by Ahmad Abdalla.

Recognizing the efforts exerted to support the audio-visual sector in the Kingdom, the festival will pay tribute to a cinema or TV personality as has been the case in previous editions. This year, the AFFA will honor the Jordanian Director Mwaffaq Al Salah, following a nomination by the Jordanian Syndicate of Artists.

It is worth mentioning that the first edition of the AFFA was launched in 2011, with the participation of films from Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Lebanon; whereas the second edition, in 2012, included films from Jordan, Algeria, Kuwait, Egypt and Lebanon. As for 2013, the festival was a big success and screened films from Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Algeria.
