New Bahraini production company to support Gulf film-makers

United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, June 27 - 2006 @ 10:06

The new company, which was announced by a group of investors during a press conference at the Coral Beach Club, will be a boon for local film-making talent as well as those in the neighboring GCC countries.

It will help to create and maintain a local infrastructure, which will make it easier for film-makers to secure the financing and support they need to turn their artistic visions into commercially viable projects. The company will be able to provide film-makers with state-of the art cameras, lighting, special effects and other equipment needed to make films with high quality modern production values.

Bahrain’s most successful film maker Bassam Al Thawadi, who directed two well-received feature films, Al Hajiz (The Barrier) in 1990 and Za’er (Visitor) in 2004, will provide the technical expertise needed to make the company’s projects a success.

“There is no shortage of talent in Bahrain and throughout the region, but film makers have always lacked the support they need to turn their dreams into reality,” said Al Thawadi. “The idea behind this company is give film makers a place to go to if they have a project they believe in. We will take these artists in, help them get the financing they need and provide them with the necessary technical support.”

“As well as discovering new talents, we will work to create new region-wide partnerships, strengthening the cultural bond between the countries of the region,” he added.

The company’s projects will help to strengthen Bahrain and the GCC’s presence at major film festivals around the world and will also provide global audiences with windows into Arab culture.

“High quality movies are one of the most effective ways of promoting a particular culture. The films will provide a showcase for viewers to understand who the people of this region are,” continued Al Thawadi. “An important by-product will be to change misconceptions they may have and improve the image of Islamic and Arab countries in the eyes of world.”
