It was under this premise that EEG hosted its 6th Community lecture for 2010 in the Emarat Atrium, Dubai at 7.30pm on the 27th July. As always the evening event was free and open to all members of the public. Attendees started arriving early and enjoyed light refreshments whilst browsing over EEG’s new issue of the Wastepaper Magazine.
EEG Chairperson, Habiba Al Marashi warmly welcomed attendees and officially opened the evening with a positive and radiant speech. She spoke about EEG’s activities over the past month which began with the founding members of EEG reuniting over a seminar and light brunch. She also mentioned how July has been a great month for visitors into the EEG office, including a group of Scouts from Qatar, keen to learn about EEG, the Swedish Ambassador and several local government officials. After highlighting a selection of EEG’s news, the speaker for the evening was introduced.
Dr. Sadek Owainati is an engineering consultant with 44 years experience in various fields of the construction industry. He is a genuine advocate of the environment and actively promotes sustainable development across all sectors. Dr. Owainati’s presentation began by summarising the meaning of sustainable development and he spoke about the concerted efforts that are happening across the world to achieve sustainability. He went on to mention that although governments and global governing bodies have a certain role to play in achieving a sustainable world, the role and power that society encompass should not be forgotten.
Dr. Owainati revisited societies historical involvement in shaping the regions perspective towards environmental issues such as resource use. He went on to speak about how our ancestors and forefathers lived in this region in harmony with nature and managed to survive within their means. They understood that a healthy environment meant more security for them. As times, opportunities and technologies have changed and evolved the perspective towards environmental issues and developments are now at a crossroads in history.
The presentation highlighted the roles that members of society can have whilst practising their daily duties. Dr. Owainati emphasised that it is our daily life choices that are the foundations of successful movement towards a sustainable future.
On a larger scale Dr. Owainati touched on the importance of green buildings, especially in the region where urban development continues to expand. He also stressed that society has an important role in accepting and demanding green principals in all sectors of life, including new and existing developments.
The key message that was portrayed during the evening was that the power society has in creating change should not be underestimated. Throughout modern day life we are all faced with challenges, decisions and cross roads but if we all took the option or choice that represented a sustainable road, the combined results from our efforts would be colossal.
Mrs. Al Marashi brought the evening to a close by thanking Dr. Sadek Owainati in the traditional EEG way. A crystal of appreciation was presented to Sadek, who had been an influential contributor to EEG’s 2010 lecture series.
EEG would also like to thank Emarat Atrium for providing the venue, Abela Catering and Crystal Gallery for the crystal plaque.
