The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has announced the details of the ground-breaking Sir Bu Nuair Island project during its participation in the in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM 2014), which is taking place at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre from the 5th to the 8th of May 2014.
One of Shurooq’s largest initiatives to date, the Sir Bu Nuair Island project, which will be developed at an estimate cost of AED500,000 million, seeks to recreate the vibrant social, commercial, and community fabric in the island to attract tourists and visitors from the UAE and beyond.
Set to be completed in 2017, the island will host a luxury five-star hotel & resort, hotel apartments and villas, a village, an amphitheatre, a museum, a mosque, an education centre, a harbour, an airport, and a number of retail outlets and other leisure offerings.
Speaking about the project HE Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), said, “The aim of this landmark project is to turn this vitally important island into a unique destination; one that offers a mix of high-end luxury and comfort, one that fosters a genuine sense of community, and one that captures the region’s vibrancy and cultural heritage in its architecture and offerings. The project will stretch over an area of 37,721 square metres, making it one of Shurooq’s most ambitious undertakings to date and the result is set to become one of the rarest gems on the crown of Sharjah and the UAE’s tourist destinations.”
Al Sarkal stated that once completed, Sir Bu Nuair Island project will include a luxury hotel with the main structure featuring sixty 1-bedroom suite units, in addition to a number of beach chalets and houses. The second part of the hotel will include 17 suites and chalets on the Hotel’s Turtle Beach.
The development will also include a 9,693 square metre village that will feature two 2-bedroom villas, ten 3-bedroom villas, four 4-bedroom villas, and one VIP villa. In addition to the villas the village will feature a total of thirty 2 and 3-bedroom apartments in both simplex and duplex arrangements.
The development will also include activity centre with student accommodation with twenty-two 6-bed chalets for the various educational programmes that will run on the island.
The Shurooq CEO emphasised that great care and attention given by Shurooq to protect and preserve the island’s vitally important ecology in collaboration with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA). “Sir Bu Nuair Island is characterised by its high biodiversity of rare species and plants, and hence it was registered on the list of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in December of last year. It is one of five sites in the UAE that have been registered on the list as well as being the second site within Sharjah to be listed – the other being the Mangrove and Alhafeya Protected Area in Khor Kalba. For this reason exhaustive research extensive studies have gone into the planning of this unique project. Our aim is to leverage Sir Bu Nuair’s unmatched natural beauty and ecological worth to create a destination that will offer an exceptional leisure experience while also protecting the rare ecological treasures it holds.”
Sir Bu Nuair Island, a marine and wildlife habitat, is located 65km off the UAE coastline on the Arabian Gulf. Travelling to the island takes 2 – 3 hours by sea, 25 minutes by plane from Jebel Ali and Abu Dhabi and 40 minutes from Sharjah. The Island is considered a natural reserve due to its unique environmental landmarks that include geological layers, natural plants and sea birds, and is characterised by its charming natural scenery and beautiful beaches.
During its participation in ATM 2014, which falls under the umbrella of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), Shurooq held a number of meetings with representatives of travel agencies and leisure operators to discus avenues of cooperation and explore investment opportunities available in the emirate’s tourism and leisure sector.
Shurooq’s portfolio of projects that are being showcased to visitors at ATM 2014 also includes Al Jabal Resort – The Chedi Khorfakkan, the Kalba Eco-tourism Project, and The Heart of Sharjah and Al Bait Hotel, as well as its already established and highly popular destinations including Al Qasba, Al Majaz Waterfront, and the recently opened Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park, among other projects currently undertaken by the Authority.
Established in 2009, Shurooq strives to encourage investment in the emirate of Sharjah by adopting the best international standards in providing quality services that help attract investors from the region and the world.
