In collaboration with the UAE embassy in Washington, DC the Emirates Foundation‘s Takatof program will be sending 12 volunteers from the United Arab Emirates on a humanitarian mission to contribute to the efforts aiming at renovating the homes destroyed by the Hurricane Sandy.

This is the fourth consecutive year where the Takatof volunteers will be travelling on a global mission to help those in need. This mission comes in line with the program’s vision that is directed towards promoting a culture of voluntary work and social responsibility among youth in the United Arab Emirates.

The mission will see a team of six Emirati male volunteers and six female volunteers, aged between 21 and 32 years participating in this voluntary program. Three members of them are members of the national emergency response voluntary program “Sanid”.

From 9th-17th May, Takatof volunteers will be helping build, construct, maintain, renovate and paint houses destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. This mission will be carried out in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International organization. The Takatof team will start its tour by joining other UAE entities representing the UAE such Yas Marina Circuit, Etihad, which are taking part in the 10 km UAE National Sheikh Zayed Kidney run organized in Central Park in New York City on 10th May 2014.

UAE National Sheikh Zayed Kidney Run is held in memory of the country’s founding President, Sheikh Zayed, who underwent a kidney transplant in the United States in 2000. The UAE Healthy Kidney race, founded in 2004, is a 10km race through Central Park that marks Sheikh Zayed’s successful kidney transplant at a US hospital in 2000. With a prize money of $10,000 to be won, the proceeds collected from the run go towards the USA National Kidney Foundation to support research efforts on Kidney diseases which threaten lives of millions of Americans.

“The on-going contributions of our volunteers in international humanitarian programs reflect the openness of our volunteers towards the world and their dedication to key international social issues. Their work also echoes the level of development of the Emirati youth,” said Maytha Al Habsi, Chief Programmes Officer at the Emirates Foundation.

“Through these international voluntary initiatives, we aim to enrich Takatof program volunteers experience and promote their social responsibility spirit as they will meet volunteers from other countries which gives them the opportunity to know and understand other cultures and promotes the Emirati voluntary spirit in multinational communities,” she added.

Inspired by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Takatof is a voluntary social program, designed by the Emirates Foundation to foster a culture of volunteering throughout the different society segments in the United Arab Emirates. The program provides the UAE youth with an opportunity to volunteer in many humanitarian and social initiatives to make good use of their leisure time.
