The Big Picture opened its doors to visitors last Saturday 10 May at 7pm, for its second edition of the independent art exhibition under the patronage of His Highness Shiekh Khalid Bin Mansoor Al Thani. The show took place at Pro Art Gallery, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and will run until 20 May 2014.

The Big Picture is an independent non-profit art initiative, which aims to promote artists in the United Arab Emirates and provide them with a platform to express their interpretation in a simple method, freeing the works from art politics, galleries profitable guidelines or fame driven market.

The initial concept in 2013 was inspired by a fast and busy society that often magnifies minor issues and gets caught up in the details of a demanding daily schedule, while ignoring the vision and the essence of where we are all heading as collectives or individuals and neglecting the significance of the journey and the overall process we each follow.

The Big Picture demolishes boundaries and does not limit the artists with the commercial factors and allows them to concentrate on art for art’s sake, while emphasizing the importance of it via large pieces.

New to this year’s exhibition was the inclusion of original works by legendary artists such as Picasso, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Roy Liechtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Bansky. Those remarkable works were selected and curated alongside artworks by more than 45 artists from the UAE, to name few: Aleksander Bezinovic, Kathryn Wilson, Emily Wang, Mark Barretto, IS and Sya ONE, among others. This new addition created a harmonious conversation between works from different generations and various backgrounds.

“The idea of including internationally renowned legends and UAE based artists side-by-side supported the main goals of The Big Picture, which is to demolish any boundaries or categorization that may limit the artists or their thought processes.” Said Ram Nath, artist and curator of The Big Picture.

The Big Picture explored multifaceted artistic creations featuring painting, photography, sculpture, digital art, performance art, installation as well as sound and video arts, by emerging and established artists.
