The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) recently concluded its participation in the 27th edition of the Turin International Book Fair in Italy. The five-day book event saw the participation of about 1,400 publishers from all over the world, and the turnout of more than 300,000 visitors.

On the fringe of its participation in the book fair, SIBF agreed with the management of the Turin International Book Fair to promote cultural exchange and understanding between both parties.

The agreement grants the publishers from the UAE and the Arab world to participate in professional activities organized by the Turin Fair in the coming years, while the Turin Fair will nominate a number of Italian publishers to participate in the SIBF Professional Programme, as well as to visit the SIBF and gain a deeper insight into the publishing experience in Sharjah and the Arab world annually.

Speaking on the occasion, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Director of the Sharjah International Book Fair, said, “Our participation in the Turin Book Fair comes within the framework of promoting cultural communication and exchange of knowledge between the European and Arab worlds. We made use of this opportunity by conducting several meetings with a wide range of Italian and European publishers. We also invited them to participate in the upcoming edition of SIBF, which will take place from 5-15 November 2014, and to take part in our annual Professional Programme for publishers that we organise annually. The aim is to encourage our European counterparts to familiarize themselves with Sharjah’s unique cultural scene, as set by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.”

“Al Ameri underlined the keenness of SIBF’s Management to develop and expand the scope of participation in the Professional Programme in order to develop the skills and experience of UAE and Arab publishers, through a host of lectures, symposiums, seminars, and workshops, adding that the expertise and support of foreign publishers is crucial for the development of the publishing industry in the Arab world. As Italy is one of the world leaders in high-quality books, design, output and print, learning form them is especially beneficial,” he added.

Al Ameri indicated that the translation grant, which was launched by the Sharjah International Book Fair with the aim of encouraging the translation of books from and into Arabic in order to further enrich Arab and global culture with new valuable books and resources in knowledge and science, has captured the attention of Italian publishers, who have expressed their happiness that the grant will contribute to bringing human civilizations closer.

The Turin Book Fair, which draws large segments of professionals and stakeholders involved in many areas related to the publishing industry and education, is the largest book fair in Italy and one of the most important ones in Europe.

As the exhibition is designed to keep teachers updated about new print and e-books that can be used in the learning process and for encouraging students to buy books, approximately 12,500 teachers from various Italian schools participated in this edition upon an agreement between the Fair’s Management and education authorities in Italy.

More than 13,000 publishers, librarians, authors, agents, illustrators and translators visited the exhibition, where they engaged in meetings, seminars and workshops dedicated solely to professionals, some of which signed business contracts and cooperation agreements with publishers and professional bodies in- and outside of Italy. These meetings offered an opportunity for professionals in the publishing industry from all around the world to share expertise and the best practices in the field.
