The UN Country Team (UNCT) in Bahrain led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and in partnership with The Supreme Council for Environment and the Bahrain Society of Engineers will commemorate World Environment Day (WED) through a workshop on Thursday, 05 June 2014 at 09:00 hrs at the Bahrain Society of Engineers premises.
The workshop entitled “Bahrain and Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities” being held under the patronage of HH Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa will comprise of an opening ceremony and presentation of a series of technical papers by the partner organizations and government counterparts relevant to the theme.
In support of the UN’s designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), WED this year will adopt SIDS in the broader context of climate change as its theme, with the slogan “Raise your voice, not the sea level” at its heart, to focus attention that climate change is a responsibility of everyone yet its impacts are felt more acutely by some than others.
With Bahrain being one of the SIDS, the UN System in Bahrain is joining hands with the Supreme Council for the Environment and the Bahrain Society of Engineers to raise awareness around the issue.
World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet.
