Demonstrating the collective power of action for a sustainable, Vale in Oman joined over 200,000 colleagues globally in solidarity for World Environment Day 2014.

Commemorating the annual event, Vale’s Managers and Supervisors joined hands to plant trees at Umayah Bint Qais School, in Liwa while employees planted 250 trees around the company’s 3,800 square meter Industrial Complex perimeter to further enhance its existing ‘green belt’.

From June 1st to 5th, the company is organizing a series of events aimed to reinforce the importance of environmental preservation and highlight how individual green actions can together result in a sustainable future for generations to come. The objective is to discuss and experience the topic of sustainability and environmental stewardship with employees and the community, in order to stimulate environmental awareness among them.

“At Vale, we have always believed that the principle of sustainable development is achieved when our business generates value for the shareholders and other stakeholders,” said Sergio Espeschit, Chief Executive Officer of Vale in Oman. “This week’s theme is ‘Active Genuine Caring. From everyone, to everyone’, we strive to highlight our commitment to efficient environmental management, with respect for people and the planet, which is fundamental to our business strategy. We want to leave a positive legacy in Oman that will generate results to the future generations,” he added.

As an environmentally conscious company, Vale adopts the best available technologies within its Pelletizing Plant and Distribution Center to protect the environment. To date, the company has invested over US$ 50 million in environmental preservation measures including the installation of advanced emission control and environmental safety systems, electrostatic precipitators which filter 99% of iron ore emissions coming from the pelletizing furnaces and a 25-meter high and 3,200-meter long wind fence surrounding the stockyard. Such initiatives are a direct result of responsibilities harbored by Vale’s employees, partners and the communities.
