Iraqi cabinet gives nod to auctioning 3G licences

: Sunday, February 09 - 2014 @ 00:30

The Iraqi cabinet has agreed to auction third-generation (3G) telecoms licences for a minimum of $307m each, Reuters has reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The cabinet refused a request by the country’s Communications and Media Commission (CMC) to grant the 3G licences automatically to the three existing mobile operators, the sources said, because it believes that would be contrary to the regulator’s statutes. A government source said no time frame had been set for the auction, and it would take considerable time to study and decide on an auction mechanism. “I doubt it will happen this year.”
