TRA hosts evening reception on opening day of WTDC-14

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) hosted an evening reception on Sunday, March 30th where the international delegates taking part in the World Conference on Telecommunication Development 2014 (WCIT-14) were invited to the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Dubai.

Etisalat were the official sponsors of the event and as part of the proceedings, Nasser Bin Hammad, Senior Manager International Affairs, TRA officially announced his candidacy for the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) for the period of 2014 to 2018. The announcement comes ahead of the elections taking place at ITU Plenipotentiary 2014 (PP-14), in Busan, Republic of Korea on October 20th – November 7th, 2014.

The evening began with an opening speech, delivered by H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director General of the TRA, which welcomed the delegates and thanked them for their active participation in the conference. H.E. Al Ghanim also issued a special thank you to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as a collective body for choosing the UAE as hosts for WTDC-14 and highlighted the level of development witnessed in the UAE in all fields related to ICT and particularly, in broadband provision and 4G.

During his speech, Engr. Nasser Bin Hammad, Senior Manager International Affairs, TRA, highlighted the UAE Government’s intent to ‘keep up with the wheel of progress and prosperity in all areas related to ICT’ and share methods of best practice with its international counterparts. Engr. Hammad also outlined that if afforded the opportunity to serve on the RRB in the next election, he would inject a series of new ideas, which will both strengthen of the board and achieve more successes.

Abdul Rahman Al Mulla, Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs at Etisalat, also addressed the audience and thanked his contacts in the TRA for their support of the UAE’s telecommunications sector and for staging an event of such international standing. He went on to say that the hosting of WTDC-14 is an indication of the extent of ICT development in the UAE’ and applauded the role of the UAE ICT sector in driving innovative government service delivery.

Al Mulla also mentioned that the creative initiatives such as Smart Government and Smart City push the workforce in various sectors, specially the telecommunications sector, to put the right effort and provide innovative solutions that help achieve the nation’s vision.

Engr. Bin Hammad added: “I stand before you today after I was nominated again by the UAE government for membership of Radio Regulations, where I had the honor to run previously during the Plenipotentiary Conference which was held in Mexico City in 2010.”

“Our aim is to keep up with the latest advancements specifically within the ICT sector, which plays a vital role in the lives of individuals and nations alike. We look forward to actively participate in all international and regional initiatives, and bridge the gap between developed and developing countries. This is dependent on our leaders and the people themselves to support us in having distinctive presence on the international map,” added Engr. Bin Hammad.

The ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-14) opened this Sunday in the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will run until Thursday April 10th. Held under the theme ‘Broadband for Sustainable Development’, over 1,500 official delegates and over 50 ICT ministers attended from over 130 countries.
