This January, a three-month environmental campaign has been launched at the Doha College, a leading British school in Qatar, in collaboration with award-winning environmental solutions provider averda and luxury lifestyle hotel W Doha Hotel & Residences. The project has been launched to raise awareness of the importance of recycling by engaging both students and parents in a number of competitions to recycle plastic bottles and cans using averda’s reverse vending machines.

From January to March, monthly competitions to recycle as many plastic bottles and cans will take place amongst students, classrooms and families, with the opportunity to win a number of exciting prizes at W Doha including cupcakes from W Café, and an all inclusive weekend stay. The campaign’s overall mission is to promote recycling as a daily habitin people’s lives by inspiring them to care for the ecosystem and take responsibility for their actions.

In keeping with Qatar’s 2030 national vision, the environmental campaign is key to ensuring the community is driven by a number of socially responsible companies that educate and raise public awareness. Recently, W Doha was honoured as the first hotel in Qatar to be awarded with the prestigious international environmental certificate, ‘Green Key’, whilst averda continues to be a major driving force to sustainable environmental solutions in Doha and the throughout Middle East.

Of the collaboration, Doha College comments, “The Environmental Club at Doha College hasmade sure every student understands the message of this campaign, to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to protect our planet. averda’sreverse vending machines have been incredibly popular. One primary student brought in 3840 plastic bottles and that was just day one! Without averda and the W Hotel this project would not have captured the student’s imagination as much as it has, we are very grateful to them for supporting our campaign and we can’t wait to see how much we have recycled at the end of the three months campaign.”

“As the largest environmental solutions provider in the region, we are committed to inspiring change,” said John Irvine, averda’s managing director of Qatar. “These reverse vending machines were developed with the goal of educating and motivating people to take responsibility for their actions. Incentives can have a huge impact on the decisions people make, and we are pleased to partner with the W Hotel and Doha College to encourage students to recycle and reuse, and to make more environmentally conscious choices.”

General Manager of W Doha, Safak Guvenc concluded: “We are honoured to be working on initiatives that drive awareness around green issues and that are aligned with Qatar’s 2030 national vision by working with the local community. Together we are on the right direction towards environmental sustainability within not only the school, the hotel and the local community, but on a global scale.”
