Recently released statistics published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) revealed an 11% increase in the revenue for 4 & 5 Star Hotels across the Sultanate in the year 2013 against 2012 figures.
The combined 2013 revenues of the 31 hotels included in the statistics registered OR149.3m ($387.8m) compared to OR134.5m ($349.3m) in 2012, registering a year-on-year growth rate of 11%. Five Star Hotels registered the bigger portion of the revenue split with OR102.2m, while the Four Star Hotels recorded revenue of OR47.1m in 2013.
The NCSI report also reveals the total number of 4 & 5 Star Hotel guests increased by 10.8% in 2013, with guest numbers totaling 614,000 against the 2012 figure of 554,000. Breaking down the guest profiles by region, European nationalities topped the list with 202,000 guests in 2013, recording an annual growth rate of 16.7% when compared to the previous year’s 173,000 guests who arrived from Europe. After European nationalities, Omani guests came in the second place, with 186,000 Omanis staying at 4 & 5 Star Hotels versus 158,000 guests in 2012, registering an annual growth rate of 17.7%. Meanwhile, GCC citizens came in the third place and their numbers recorded a growth of 14.6% from 79,000 guests in 2012 to stand at 90,000 guests in 2013. Hotel guests from Asian nationalities came fourth in the list, however their numbers dropped from 63,000 guests in 2012 to 60,000 in 2013, registering a drop of 5.5%. Meanwhile, Americans followed in fifth place recording 27,000 guests in 2013 against the 2012 total of 26,000, registering an increase of 3%.
Other Arab nationalities (non-GCC citizens) came in the sixth place with a 22.1% increase in guest numbers in 2013, with guest numbers totaling 22,000 against the 2012 figure of 18,000. 4 & 5 Star Hotels guests from Oceania came in the eighth place, with year-on-year guest numbers decreasing by 42.9% with guest numbers decreasing from 13,000 in 2012 to 7,000 in 2013, while African guests also registered a significant drop of 12.8%, with 4,000 guests recorded in 2013. Lastly, guests hailing from other nationalities recorded a decrease of 18.4%, registering 16,000 guests in 2013 against the 2012 total of 20,000.
During 2013, Five Star hotels recorded an overall occupancy rate of 60.6% versus the 2012 average of 55.3%, registering a growth of 9.6% year-on-year. Likewise, Four Star hotels also recorded an increase in their overall occupancy rates of 5.1%, with occupancy rates standing at 56.7% in 2013 against the 2012 total of 54%.
