The Ministry of Transport and Communications has floated the eight tender package for building the Batinah Expressway project. According to the Tender Board website, the tender documents will be distributed until August 28 and it will open on September 22, Times of Oman has reported. The first six main packages have already been floated and are under various stages of planning and construction. The Batinah Expressway will connect the Muscat Expressway in the wilayat of Barka to Khatmat Milahah in the wilayat of Shinas. When completed tentatively by the year 2016, the Batinah Expressway will serve as a new all-weather, 8-lane superhighway extending from Muscat to Khatmat Malaha on Oman’s border with UAE. The project, with an estimated cost of OR1bn, will provide strong new impetus to economic investment along the North and South Batinah governorates and the hinterland, as well as drive Oman’s ambitions to emerge as a logistics gateway to the Gulf region.
