: Monday, August 11 - 2014 @ 15:26

In partnership with Oman Oil Company (OOC) and Bank Sohar, Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA) recently held a number of Be Street Smart activities in Muscat targeting over 200 people. The activities included road safety awareness talks about the dangers of speeding, importance of seat belts, child’s restraints, risks of using mobile phones and the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations. Enhancing the messages, ORSA and Be Street Smart team distributed flyers to different road users.

Shaima Al-Lawati, ORSA Chief Executive Officer said, “Engaging with the youth in planning and developing road safety awareness ideas and activities is essential to change the attitude and road behavior of the community, achieve accident-free roads, as well as empower youth to empower each other in spreading awareness. The ‘Wall of Road Safety Messages’ that was developed at the recent Be Street Smart activities demonstrated that youth are indeed well skilled and have the creativity and mind-set to attract those of the same age.”

She added, “In addition, a survey was conducted to further understand the youth, evaluate their knowledge on road safety and identify the challenges they face. The responses will allow us to tailor make road safety programs and enrich our current road safety trainings and workshops.”

‘Be Street Smart’ selects college and university students and young people from Oman Road Safety Association (ORSA) and AIESEC in Oman to become Road Safety Educators who are enriching the project with their own experiences and knowledge and becoming ambassadors of road safety in the Sultanate. The Educators will conduct regular workshops to train youth from selected colleges and universities in Muscat, Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Al Dhakhliya, Al Sharqiya North, Al Sharqiya South and Al Buraimi, with guidance and support from ORSA.
