The British Council in the UAE has announced the launch of the Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) Digital Publishing Award 2014 to foster business and collaborations between the UK and other countries.
The 10 international brightest emerging entrepreneurs from participating countries – including Columbia, Russia and China – will be invited to take part in a programme to the UK, from 5-12 April 2014, as they will be given insight into the UK’s rapidly evolving digital publishing sector.
Highlights of the programme include a glimpse into the latest developments in the UK’s publishing industry, curated access to all three days of the London Book Fair, the opportunity to present business ideas to a panel of judges and other delegates at the London Book Fair, and networking sessions with international participants and young publishing entrepreneurs.
To qualify for the programme, applicants must own a young business, or run a non-for profit, in the digital publishing sector with at least 2 years’ experience and no more than 7 years in business in the UAE. They should be able to demonstrate entrepreneurial skills in promoting the sector and to potentially be a future leader of the publishing sector in the UAE. An IELTS score of no less than 6 is mandatory since the programme demands a high level of English proficiency. Applications are open to all nationalities who meet the above criteria.
According to Marc Jessel, Country Director, British Council UAE: “The boom in digital publishing is revolutionising the publishing sector globally and the UAE is not far behind in becoming part of this phenomenon.
“We expect that the YCE Digital Publishing Awards 2014 will be an ideal platform to encourage budding entrepreneurs in the field of digital publishing by offering them unparalleled business development opportunities in modern day digital publishing, through enhancement of business ties and partnerships between the UK and the UAE.
“We are looking for entrepreneurs who in their business are presenting content and ideas in innovative ways and who are using new technology to engage with and respond to their readers; people who are using transmedia ideas to bring publishing to life; organisations using digital to engage with cultural and social issues; and companies building innovative businesses in the digital publishing sector”
“We expect several high quality applications to the programme and we look forward to hosting the best of those to the UK this year.”
On completion of the programme, candidates will be expected to actively engage in future collaboration and business with UK-based companies, organisations and individuals that they meet.
Application forms for the YCE Digital Publishing Awards 2014 are available online at www.britishcouncil.org/uae. The last date for submitting applications is 1 March 2014. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on 6 March 2014 comprising an eminent panel of judges from the UAE’s publishing sector. The UAE winner will be announced on 12 March 2014.
