GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi hosted the first of three ‘Meet the Educator’ sessions for parents considering the school for their children.
Hosted by Mrs Kathy Miner, the newly appointed Head of School joining GEMS from the prestigious American School of Paris, France and Mr Tom Farquhar, a leading US educationalist and Dean of American Curriculum at GEMS Education, parents from across the UAE capital attended the question and answer session which was held at the school in Khalifa City.
The evening began with a presentation of the GEMS Core Values which underpin the curriculum and the broad array of enrichment activities offered at the school. During the question and answer session, a range of topics were discussed from College opportunities available to graduates to in-depth details of the International Baccalaureate program offered by the school. A tour of facilities followed by informal conversations with school leaders concluded the event.
Speaking after the event, Mrs Miner said, “Here at GEMS American Academy – Abu Dhabi, we believe in providing a world class education in an environment that fosters learning and stimulates our students’ imagination. That means not just providing outstanding facilities, but also great teachers supported by an active program of parental engagement. Parents want to become better informed about how to make the right choices regarding the education of their children, so we appreciate opportunities like this where we can share a conversation and respond to their questions. Teaching has changed since these parents were last in a classroom – there are new technologies, new curricula, and dramatic changes in methods and assessments. Today we know that a rich offering of extra-curricular activities is important in the development of the skills needed for leadership and collaboration. Addressing all of these topics makes for a truly engaging forum.”
Adding to the discussion, Mr Farquhar, said, “The American Curriculum and the IB program provide a well-rounded education for students, encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, and fostering imagination and creativity. A program with this richness provides children with a firm foundation for future success both academically and socially. It has been enlightening for me to meet with parents and understand their specific needs and discuss how the grounding of an American education can help to support their children in an increasingly international environment.”
The next ‘Meet the Educator’ sessions will be held at the school at 10am this Saturday, 16 August and at 6pm on Monday, 18 August. Parents interested in registering their children for the coming academic year should call 02 557 4880 or visit www.gemsaa-abudhabi.com/ for more information.
