Knowledge Without Borders (KWB) has been shortlisted to receive ‘The International Education Initiatives Award’, which forms part of the inaugural ‘International Publishing Industry Excellence Awards’. Organised by the London Book Fair, in association with The UK Publishers Association (The PA), these awards aim to showcase the best international companies and individuals and included 16 prestigious awards.
KWB is one of only three organisations to be shortlisted for The International Education Initiatives Award, which recognises international organisations that promote literacy, numeracy, and wider access to education, with the other nominees hailing from Turkey and Australia respectively.
Speaking about the Award, Rashid Al Kous, General Manager of Knowledge without Borders, said, “We are extremely honoured to be recognised at this level. The London Book Fair is one of the most important international platforms in the publishing sector, making this an excellent opportunity for us to increase our international experience and create awareness in the global community of what it is that we do. KWB will continue progress to achieve our ambitious goals – distributing more than one million books for free to 42000 Emirati families. We have met every target we have set and it is extremely encouraging to see that our hard work and dedication is being noticed, both in this region and beyond. This honour will only serve to galvanise us to even greater efforts as we pursue the promotion of a culture of reading among the people of the Emirates.”
Al Kous expressed thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for his unlimited support to the Knowledge without Borders project and to Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Organizing Committee of the project for her directives which have significantly contributed to developing performance and delivering new, unique, and attractive books.
The Awards, which celebrate international excellence in the book industry, cover all aspects of the business of international publishing, including academic publishing, the supply chain, education, children’s publishing, and digital innovation. A panel of UK judges, with international or discipline-specific expertise, have judged the individual award categories. The London Book Fair- International Book Industry Excellence Awards will take place on Tuesday 8 April, the first day of the 2014 London Book Fair.
The Knowledge without Borders project was launched under the auspices of HH Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the close follow up of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Organising Committee of Knowledge without Borders project. The move aims to spread community awareness about the importance of reading and general knowledge, and to establish a library in every house containing a valuable collection of books that address different topics, after studying the cultural needs of each family.
