Diligent high school and university students can now apply for a study scholarship in the Maersk Oil High Achievers Scholarship Programme. The programme, which targets Qataris studying the higher education disciplines of Engineering, Law and Business Administration, was established in support of the company’s commitment to education and capacity building in Qatar.
Scholarships are awarded to Qatari students based on their high school or university grade point average, area of study and the reputation of their prospective university, in addition to internal Maersk Oil interviews and tests. Applications for the scholarships are taken throughout the year.
Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Al-Thani, Maersk Oil Qatar’s deputy managing director, said: “We are committed to making a real and meaningful contribution to Qatar through programmes like the Maersk Oil High Achievers Scholarship. The programme is our way of acknowledging the country’s most committed Qatari students and of ensuring they are given the opportunity to attend some of the world’s best universities. As a company that is recognised as specialists in complex oilfields like Al Shaheen, offshore Qatar, these scholarships are helping us to attract the best and brightest but more importantly they are also helping to build capacity in the country.”
Maryam Al-Abdallah, a student at Texas A&M University is one of the recipients of the Maersk Oil High Achievers Scholarship. She said: “The scholarship programme encouraged me not only to pursue a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in Texas A&M but I am also looking forward to pursuing a master’s degree in the same, and to become one of the few female Qatari Engineers in this field”.
“The High Achievers Scholarship Programme allows me to contribute to the development of my nation. At Maersk Oil it is not obligatory for female engineers to work offshore, so I can pursue the career I want with respect to my culture and traditions. While there is no contractual obligation on me to work for Maersk Oil Qatar after graduating, their professionalism has motivated me so much. I will definitely apply for a job there once I graduate,” Maryam added.
The High Achievers Scholarship Programme is just one of many schemes run by Maersk Oil Qatar to encourage greater participation by Qataris in education while simultaneously improving the future career prospects. The company also recently launched a new Qatarization Strategy that included a high profile recruitment campaign targeting degree-educated Qataris. The strategy includes a new, two-year Qatari Development Programme for those early in their careers and a Career Orientation Review Scheme, overseen by a new in-house coach, all of which help Qatari employees to fulfil their personal development and career ambitions.
