The Office of Education Training and Development (OETD) of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QFR&D) has announced a new educational initiative to encourage students to pursue a career in science.
The three-week “High School Science Camp” is a fully sponsored programme at the University of California Irvine (UCI), a major research university in the US. Designed for Qatari high school students in grades 10 and 11, the Science Camp will provide an introduction to careers in science and hands-on experience in a research lab. While in the United States, students will learn about career opportunities in science and technology, and academic programmes for research and study abroad.
“This is an exciting opportunity to promote careers in science and research for Qatar’s future generation by exploring what’s available at a major university in the US,” said Dr. Wyatt Hume, Executive Director Office of Education Training and Development.
“We hope this opportunity will help launch students on their way to a degree in science or technology. As part of the programme, students will gain practice in entrance requirement exams like the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and learn how to apply to universities in the US.”
For qualifying students, Qatar Foundation will pay all expenses including tuition, transportation, room, and board for the three-week programme. The first week will be held in Doha where students will be introduced to college prep courses such as entrance exams and assimilation to the US. The following two weeks will take place in UCI in California.
Science Camp activities will include hands-on laboratory experience, as well as an introduction to research programmes in areas like energy, genetics, climate change and the environment. Students will meet directly with research scientists and engineering faculty, and have opportunities for informal information sharing sessions.
