Texas A&M University at Qatar held Water and Energy Workshop, 15-17 February at the Hamad bin Khalifa Student Center at Education City. The workshop, co-organized by the University of Bradford, the British Council, the British Embassy and Qatar Energy and Environment Research Institute (QEERI), brings international academic and industrial experts to address Energy and Water issues. The three-day event will certainly open the door for future multidisciplinary research and knowledge transfer activities tackling global energy and water problems.

Dr. Mark H. Weichold, dean and CEO at Texas A&M at Qatar, said, “Texas A&M at Qatar is grateful to the University of Bradford for co-sponsoring and co-organizing this workshop and British universities delegates and their mentors’ participation in this event and for sharing with us the outcome of their research activities and achievements,”

“I would like to also thank our partners at Qatar University, QEERI, QNRF and within local and regional industry for their participation and contributions. I hope the discussions at this workshop and the networking opportunities over the past three days will result in numerous research collaborations and projects that benefit Qatar, the UK and the world.” Weichold added.

Dr. Nimir Elbashir, associated professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M at Qatar, said, “Texas A&M Qatar has established global collaborations with many universities and research institutions around the globe, mostly are funded by Qatar National Research Fund, Qatar Science Technology Park as well as local and international industry partners.” “I am glad to work with many of British institutions in several projects in unique collaboration models between academia and industry. I have partnered with Professor Iqbal Mujtaba, professor of computational process engineering at the University of Bradford in extending this collaboration while taking advantage of the Qatar UK Researcher Network Programme, in partnership with various research and higher education organizations from around the world.”

“We are expecting this workshop to pave the road for stronger research collaborations between Qatar and the United Kingdom in areas that are extremely important to both countries.” Elbashir added.

International research collaboration is essential for the global knowledge economy, and it has been shown that internationally mobile researchers tend to be more productive. Furthermore, a shared research interest can help to build trust and relationships between people from very different backgrounds and cultures.

Professor Mujtaba, said, “We have been delighted to organize this timely event on ‘Energy and Water’ funded jointly by the British Council, the British Embassy and Texas A&M at Qatar where the UK scientists and engineers with both academic and industrial backgrounds are getting together in Doha for three days to address Energy and Water issues.”

Director of the British Council Qatar Martin Hope, said, “The British Council Qatar is delighted to facilitate this exchange between Qatar and the UK and we hope that this workshop will create long-lasting relationships between individuals and institutions, and a strong sustainable network leading to joint Energy and Water research projects in the future.”
