Ambulatory Healthcare Services, a SEHA health system facility, is gearing up to join governments, national dental associations, student bodies and private and public health clinics in more than 70 countries to mark World Oral Health Day on 20 March under the international theme ‘Celebrating Healthy Smiles’.
World Oral Health Day (WOHD) primarily aims to create global awareness on the importance of maintaining optimal dental and oral health throughout a person’s lifetime.
As part of its WOHD activities, AHS has lined up oral health awareness campaigns in the emirate of Abu Dhabi to underline the importance of regular dental check-ups for the prevention of oral diseases and other health conditions that are likely to impact an individual’s overall well-being.
Dr. Omar Al Jaberi, Chief Medical Officer said: “Dedicated to improving the state of healthcare in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, AHS is proud to join other professional health associations and communities around the world to celebrate the World Oral Health Day. The 2014 tagline, “Celebrating Healthy Smiles”, stresses the importance of oral health for maintaining healthy, confident and successful lives.
“Ninety per cent of the world’s population suffers from oral disease in their lifetime ranging from tooth caries, periodontal diseases, tooth decay and oral cancer. AHS, in line with the World Dental Federation, wishes to underline the fact that a person’s mouth is a veritable indicator of the state of his or her general wellness. Regular dental checkups will help people detect and take timely medical action to prevent the onset of grave illnesses that affect the entire body.”
AHS has scheduled school visits as part of the campaign, during which dental gift packs, containing a toothbrush and toothpaste will be handed out to students. The initiative will seek to persuade students to follow regular oral hygiene and healthy sugar-free diet, coupled with periodical dental check-ups. In schools, AHS will also give out dental health-related comics featuring the highly popular mascot ‘Salem’ as well as games relating to dentistry and dental health.
AHS dental services manager Dr Ninette Banday said: “AHS’ WOHD activities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi will specially target children as toothache resulting from extreme tooth decay is one of the main reasons for school absenteeism. We plan to present the television episodes of the children’s show ‘Salem’ to the children in order to set the popular mascot as an example to follow in matters of oral care, ideal dietary habits and teeth hygiene.”
