ORAL HEALTH CHARITY the International Dental Health Foundation will focus on the importance of brushing, good nutrition, and regular visits to the dentist for the very first UAE Smile Month.

The month-long campaign, the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates, will take place throughout June and will raise awareness of good oral health while looking to help reduce and prevent oral diseases.

During UAE Smile Month, hundreds of dental offices and pharmacies are expected to hold special oral health events and activities in a bid to promote three key messages; brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks and visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Chief Executive of the International Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, explains why our oral health is so important and why we should take an active interest in improving the health of our mouth.

Dr Carter says: “A growing body of evidence suggests that there is more to poor oral health than meets the eye, so taking simple but effective measures takes on added importance. A number of studies in the last 12 months have linked poor oral health to an increased risk of general health problems including pneumonia, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes and complications during pregnancy. These illnesses alone should prompt us all to think twice about our oral health and demonstrate the importance of a healthy smile.

“UAE Smile Month is a gentle reminder about our oral health and is the ideal time to review our daily routine to make sure we are not putting our smiles or general health at risk.”

Despite retaining serious oral health messages, the campaign looks to engage dental offices, pharmacies, hospitals, schools, shopping malls and workplaces with thousands of Smileys – the campaign’s symbol.

“The Smileys are a great way for everyone to take part in UAE Smile Month,” Dr Carter adds.

“They are fun and can make oral health an approachable subject. Behind the smiles there are still some important oral health messages to remember – that’s why our Smileys will also aim to educate as many people as possible through positive educational messages. In the lead up to the campaign, please look out for them. There will be thousands readily available so they shouldn’t be hard to miss!”

UAE Smile Month, was officially announced at the UAE International Dental Conference & Arab Dental Exhibition, is sponsored by Listerine, Colgate and INDEX and is supported by the Dubai Health Authority.
