The members of Pink Caravan are campaigners for breast cancer awareness and have been travelling around the UAE, a journey that started in 2011. The project is now in its third year and their aim is to be the vehicle of change by engaging with communities and providing health checkups for early cancer detection on February 21st, from 10a.m to 8p.m at Deerfields Townsquare, Abu Dhbai.
Deerfields Townsquare Shopping Center located in Al Bahia is hosting the Pink Caravan family for a one-day medical camp. The objective is to raise awareness about Breast Cancer and the latest available medical treatments. Pink Caravan plans to visit rural areas and new locations of the country to spread awareness about breast cancer. One in eight women has a chance of being affected by cancer if not treated at the earliest. Up to 80% of breast cancer suffers have no family history of the disease.
Dr Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General for Friends of Cancer Patients society (FoCP) and Head of Pink Caravan’s Medical and Awareness committee, said, “The pan-UAE medical screenings and awareness programme, which was rolled out on February 15th aims to screen 5,000 people during the first 11 days .Our focus is to ensure that people realize the importance of timely and regular screenings. Prevention is better than cure – and regular examination is the way to go, as 95 percent of breast cancer cases, if detected early enough, can be cured. This is the message we seek to spread while encouraging both women and men to come in large numbers to avail our absolutely free services that are being made available at various locations around the UAE.”
The medical camp at Deerfields will be well equipped with mobile breast cancer screening unit, doctors, professional medical staff, and volunteers to guide visitors to the health camp on 21st February from 10 a.m to 8p.m. Men too are encouraged to avail of the free checkup as 1 in 1000 men are affected by breast cancer. Pink Caravan aims to increase the number of men coming for checkups, as they build on their fight against cancer this year.
“Even if it’s not October and officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Breast Cancer remains a possibility and regular check-ups help counter it before it affects our mothers, sisters and others close to us,” says Bruce von Kaufmann, Deerfields Townsquare Mall Manager.
“We are happy to give the community free check ups and medical advice and hope people visit the Pink Caravan while at Deerfields to become more aware of their health,” he furthers.
Deerfields Townsquare is a community pillar for both leisure and lifestyle while constantly participating in health awareness programs. Collaborating with the Pink Caravan is a natural extension of Deerfields’ initiatives towards the betterment of society.
“We are also indebted to Deerfields Townsquare, who will host the campaign on February 21st, and in doing so, will enable hundreds of people to avail free check-ups,” Dr Al Madhi added.
“We are honoured to host The Pink Caravan at Deerfields Townsquare,” sums Bruce von Kaufmann. “It is all about motivating the community towards healthy living.”
