Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), in collaboration with the US-based Boston Children’s Hospital, has held a workshop on genetic diseases research. The workshop drew more than 50 physicians and genetics experts from HMC, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), Sidra Medical and Research Center and the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs. The workshop was also attended by a number of specialist physicians from Arab and Gulf countries.

In addition, the event included several scientific lectures on ‘Genetic Neurological Diseases’ held by the Clinical and Metabolic Genetics Section at HMC. Delivered by eminent speakers from Boston Children’s Hospital, the talks were attended by more than 500 HMC medical and nursing staff.

Dr. Tawfiq Bin Omran, Senior Consultant and Head of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics at HMC, said, “These continuous efforts of the Clinical and Metabolic Genetics Section aim at providing our medical staff with exciting training opportunities and the latest scientific updates in this field.”

“The workshop focused on highlighting the important role of genetic studies in the early detection and diagnosis of genetic disorders in children with special needs. Another main goal of this workshop was to raise awareness on the importance of genetic researches and to promote the exchange of expertise and ideas between scientific organizations,” said Professor Christopher Walsh, Chief of the Division of Genetics at Boston Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Prof. Walsh also noted that even major research institutes cannot complete their research without sharing different elements and some useful tools within their research with other organizations. “This is why we came to HMC,” he added.

Prof. Walsh stressed, “Scientific research in the field of genetics have now become accessible to everyone; however, the findings of such research required specialized centers with enormous capabilities in order to be translated into clinical practices and to make the maximum use of any discoveries.”

Speaking on the genetic factors of autism and the latest scientific developments achieved at Boston Children’s Hospital in this field, Prof. Walsh announced the discovery of more than 20 genes that were found responsible for some neurological diseases that have direct effects on the brain.

Prof. Walsh said, “He was impressed by the steady, rapid, and constant development of HMC’s research profile.”
